You have caught feelings and thoughts that are exceptionally scary but so true to read. The fascination to some goes beyond the act of being sane. Haiku is a good follow up

I honestly don't know what these people are thinking, it just struck me that they have to be crazy.

    Thanks, Barb,

Hi Carol, A poignant haibun about wildfire. I can sympathise and understand what you are describing. Where we live in Spain, we always live in fear of fire. We are vigilant. What is more we have a drought five years running. Your words bring it all to the fore. All the best. Ulla:)))

We must have similar weather, we're in about the fifth year of drought too. This will be a bad fire season for us...I hope you fare better!

It's hard for most of us to imagine that anyone would destroy the natural habitat for all those wonderful little critters, burn trees that will never be replace in our lifetimes, and risk burning down peoples' homes or the out-of-control flames spreading into neighborhoods. Great job. :-)

I think we've lost 18 homes so far, maybe more by now. Everything is so dry, any flame turns into a big fire with extreme fire behavior. Some of the firefighters said it was the worst they had ever seen :(

I was in Los Angeles a few years ago for Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita race course. The fires were so bad that we couldn't fly out from LA or even San Diego for three extra days. There were two to four inches of ash on cars in the hotel parking lot. So we just hung out with Johnny Deep at his club, "The Viper Club."

This, for many reasons, terrifies me. My son, Landon, sent me photos yesterday of fires just north of Los Angeles... yeah, Glendale is just north of LA if I'm not mistaken. Looks like, also, upon further study, there are fires between Malibu and Santa Monica... isn't that in your neck of the woods?
It's terrifying.
He said it was just on the other side of the mountains... It looked pretty large and menacing... it's also really screwing with his asthma. :(

this is SO well done, Carol, it just jerks at my emotions. I lost all track of whether or not it was all terse language, present tense, etc, etc, just that it's REALLY a find piece of writing. I didn't come to give you a six. dammit.

But then... how could I leave and NOT?

Well done, (please stay safe)
Cat

The Sand Fire (Santa Clarita) is really the only wildfire we have going right now. Still, not that far from LA. The wind direction has shifted so that should improve the air quality for your son.

I got home from work, exhausted. I had an idea to write about that I abandoned, and tried to not think - just write. So this is what happened :)

    Thanks so much, Cat!

Do you mean to tell me there are people who go into a beautiful forest and purposely set it on fire?
Good God, what in the HELL kind of monster is mankind becoming? All of those animals, all of that life-giving oxygen up in flames. All of that beauty...
You know what I think they should do to people who get caught doing something like that? Place them in an oxygen deprivation tank and slowly suffocate them to death.
They wanna destroy everyone's oxygen, homes in the area, and natural habitat? Fine, them let them know what it feels like to not be able to breathe until their lungs explode, gasping for precious air.
Sounds a bit harsh, doesn't it?
Nah. It's what they deserve.

Needless to say, your well written, expressive haibun and subsequent related haiku has me all fired up, Carol.

Well done...

It's not really a forest, it's more like desert mountains with brush and chaparral. But I know what you mean - it is a crime to set fires like this, destroy homes, habitat, and there are always deaths - animals and human. Sometimes people set them by accident.
People rarely get what they deserve for this kind of thing. We should turn 'em all over to you Dean - let you take care of it! the result would be -- no more firebugs!

It would not bode well for one of 'em if I ever caught them doing it.
There are lots of places to hide... "things" deep in the woods, lots of remote places in the desert as well.
Know whadda I mean, Jelly Bean? :)

The world [is] launched into delicious madness.

Wow. . .the mind of lunacy stripped bare. Almost beyond comprehension.
Delirium and psychosis made to feel real through your compelling prose
and shocking senryu! Compelling to read and contemplate Carol -

Trembling fingers draw forth a match
I'm screaming - to match the fire
I'm capering, [inviting] the blaze to draw close.
Let the fire consume all;

most of all, me.

Hypnotizing write!!!

Don't think I'm a lunatic, lol, I was feeling angry and upset about the fire. For some reason I take these fires personally - I used to be a wildland fire fighter - that must be why. Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't know what got into me - I guess it was a full day of worrying about the fire and all the people trying to save their animals and homes. Tons of people have horses out there, and there are several animal refuges. A truly scary fire!

Ciliverde....absolutely the best one I've read in the Potlatch Challenge for this week on "Rain". Your short, terse sentences are chock-full of fabulous imagery without verbose language incorporated for effectiveness. The content is just awesome. Very different approach on rain. Great job!!!! Love it. God bless and hugs, Susanne

I couldn't bear to write about real rain because it's been so long since we've had any. So I wrote about showers of ash. Thank you so much!!

Hi Carol,
I simply do not understand the logic of some people. Why would they chose to do that? To be consumed by the very flames that you cause is a strange cry for help that he obviously doesn't want if that makes sense. So sad to the the devestation fire causes. How does someone gain pleasure from that?
A really great read.

I was just trying to imagine the mind of someone who would light a fire in the brush or wilderness - thinking that they have to be crazy. Don't you think? The fire here just keeps growing, like nothing can stop it :((

Another one to read and re-read many times so as not to miss a jot or tittle. Surprisingly, my favorite line--one of many--"winds lose their way". So you are trying to tune in on the madness of people who do things like this. Again, it would seem like the more we learn, the less we know. But to write it anyway, that's where the genius raises its head. (If I do enough of these, I wonder if it will automatically come.) I have weighed in. I don't know anybody who could write a better poem about fire. Smiles'n'stuff, Marcia

Yes, I was trying to tune into the madness...hard to say why. We forecast the weather for these fires, and it's painful to see them grow and grow, in spite of all the efforts to fight it. This one is bad - 35,000 acres now.

I just decided that anyone who would set a fire like this must be crazy...don't you think?

Super busy at work, and behind in answering my reviews!
