This is truly a food for thought write.
For I can relate to many names calls and hurtful comment not only by children but adult.
I don't blame the children at a certain age because they hear the talk in their homes or they are never told not to say those things to or about people. When my children as what certain words mean or why are they calling us those awful names I tell them what those words mean back in slavery time segregation time and today. If it happens again I go talk to the parents with the children and tell them what they are saying is cruel and hateful.
I don't think what those children were saying was cute.
I pray you understand my point a view.

    Of course I understand, Cookie.
But my children have never been racist. That's something I have always taught them. In fact, they have lots of black friends and so do I. We're all the same, skin colour doesn't matter.
My daughter was only three or so when she called that man Michael Jordan and she didn't mean any harm.

I was not referring to you or your family. and what you daughter said was not mean.
it was a complement the man walked away smiling.
I was referring to other people.
We are all children of God.
    Have a blessed day.

Kids do have a habit of embarrassing us and they do it often. Sometimes I think it's a plan to keep us from being too proud of them.

I understand your embarrassment. Your story reminds me of a time I was in the grocery store with my little girl. I was at the cash register, and behind me was a man with the worst looking dreads I had ever seen. They were all over the place, and they were light colored making them even more pronounce.

My little gray eyed girl of about 11 months old was sitting in the seat of the shopping cart. i began to sweat as I saw her eyes fixated on the man's hair. She moved from the left and I blocked her with my body, then to the right as I again blocked her so that she couldn't see him. Then she pointed her little finger in his direction and yelled to me, "look Mommy, his hair is a MESS! he needs a comb."
I turned around in slow motion and apologized. He smiled and said, "its okay."
I couldn't wait to get out of that store.

Excellent piece for the contest and very well written.
No problems noted and the last paragraph pulls it all together in one package.

From the mouths of babes. We never ever know what children will say nor when they will say it. These were great examples that you wrote about. It was very enjoyable and brought back great memories. Thanks.

Thanks so much for reading everything I write. BTW, why don't I get any notifications when you write something yourself? I'm going to check now to see if I'm following you.

You are so welcome. I don't write very often, most of my time here is reading and reviewing. I guess I have to be super inspired lol.

This is embarrassing. But don't worry, children are forgiven much lol.
I like the language and the light and conversational tone.

I would have given five stars except that I didn't think it was focused. A disclaimer is stated in the line, "Well, this was just a preamble. Let me tell you my story. I promise to stop beating about the bush now", but I would have preferred if you had only used the example with your daughter because it ties in with the introduction, while the witch example seems unrelated (though embarrassing).

God bless in the competition. I look forward to reading more of your work.

a well-written contest entry.I think every parent in the world has been in that position at one time or another, Children have such good timing too, They seem to knowexactly when what they sat or do could not embarrass you more.

A very well-written story about some embarrassing moments with your children. They usually don't know what they say in their innocence, but it can be embarrassing for us, as the parents.

Thanks for reading, Sandra. I love remembering these stories now, even if they embarrassed me back then.
