The best part of summer was those romantic get-aways.

I enjoyed reading your summer poem "Summer Get A-Way's". You told a lovely romantic story. I especially liked the line "before the kids". I also liked your painting.
All the best.

Just absolutely totally perfect!! I loved every line, and I'm quite nostalgic for those lost days of summer. And the eggs. And the steaks. And the bass. Ha ha...LOVED this!! Blessings...

This is an excellent from sunrise to bedtime poem that follows the course of a summer day for a couple. I love the direct address of your opening lines which hooked me:

Do you recall those get-aways.
two days of heaven, sometimes three,
we'd spend together at the lake,
before the kids, just you and me?

You fill your poem with sensory details that put the reader right there at that cabin on the lake. Here is one of my favorite stanza for its intensity of sensory details:

Has coffee ever smelled as good
as what we brewed in Gramps' old pot?
"Awakes the sinuses," you said.
I let mine cool, you drank it hot.

Although it is smoothly rhymed, your voice feels natural and flows well. Your word choice delighted my ears, heart, and imagination.

Congratulations on placing second in the contest with your fine entry.

This poem about summer, Summer Get-Aways, so impresses me as it captures those tiny items in memory that sometimes fade from the consciousness. Like...
"lard-fried eggs and griddle cakes" which we'll never see again
"so fairy-kissed we dared not wink" absorbing how precious and important those moments were
"the bass I'd caught and charcoal baked" the closeness of labor to enjoyment that justifies the escape from the din of the world that is too much with us.

A very well-written summer poem, two lovers alone in a beautiful getaway. Where you can live in a fantasy world, making memories of romance that will last a life time.

Indeed such getaways are like living in a fantasy world and too often are too brief. Thank you for sharing my summer poem, Sandra, and your kind praise. Rod

A beautifully penned poem about summer, young love, and the joys of getting away from it all. The poem weaves a tale among its lines and it soothes the soul. Good luck in the contest,

Really lovely memories of leisurely summer days. Sounds like honeymoon days or perhaps empty-nesters. I like the reference to Grandpa's coffee pot as well as his fishing pole. It adds that element of time passing and yet the connection to the past.

I am delighted you enjoyed my nostalgic glimpse of past summers when young couples could get away. I have used this setting in several posted poems when Gramps was still living and the speaker was a boy. Feel free to browse through my portfolio. Rod

What beautiful memories. Very well written, smooth flow, and no nits to mar its perfection. Never had a getaway. You describe such a blissful, simplistic weekend that I think every young couple, or old, would envy.

I like to think that most married couples experience get-aways like this sometime early in their marriages. Thank you so much for sharing and your very kind praise.

I love this poem. You have written a lovely and heartwarming poem about a special time in summer. So many images to help me feel the awesomeness of a summer at Gramp's cottage.

Best wishes in the contest!
