Hey, Craig.

Read through this poem too, letter in a poem, use of fubar in an apt way. A steady flow, easy to read, the topic one that just has me baffled often.

The general emotion I get around this is a sickly anger. I read an article about a child that shot his sister because her grandfather left his gun on a dresser. But, even after that tragedy, the whole family kept making it clear, love their guns. Sad to lose a kid, but they wouldn't trade their guns for nuthin.

hi Craig
I like your book of extraordinary peculiarities.
as one ex soldier to another , we know everything in the army is divided into
three parts, so we have
f..cked
up beyond
all recognition
sound kinda mystical. up beyond, like the hand of God.
you did a splendid job . I know how hard it is to
write about something and bend it to your will. :-))Z.

    Thanks for reviewing :)

I have never been a soldier, though my father was in the infantry in WWII. But still, I appreciate their sometimes rather colourful additions to the language!

    Cheers, Craig

Interesting author's notes about the word for this day and it certainly goes well with this poem about arming the teachers, you're right it is bizarre, to us, I wonder how many American parents agree with him. Good one Craig,
cheers,
valda

Not sure about the parents, Valda, but it's pretty clear the majority of students and teachers don't. Many thanks once again :) Craig

The country's already fubar and has been for about fifteen years.

To value guns more than you value kids

If this were true, then you WOULD keep armed guards in their schools. Do you know that since the Colorado school shooting there have been 130 of them? (sometimes given as 181 which is wrong) Yes, we have had 130 school shootings where at least one person died! They don't all make the news, just the biggest death tolls.

If that cop outside had just gone in and shot the killer in the back, he could have saved lives. He was a coward. There are many teachers who are comfortable with guns and would volunteer. But they are not allowed to help stop the murderers because their school is a (stupid) gun-free zone (as if killers would obey a sign).

Now, it's sad that it has come to this. I would much prefer that laws were passed to restrict ownership of military guns and anything not needed for hunting or basic self-protection. STate laws are not enough. Chicago has tough laws, but the killers go to Indiana to get weapons. So... we NEED tougher federal restrictions.

Until we can stop the crazies with therapy and/or stop these mass-murder guns from being sold, the ONLY way to protect our children is giving schools a way to fight back, to DEFEND themselves.

Or would you rather have your child sitting defenseless when an insane murder points his weapon at his chest? Come on, Craig, you can't really mean what you're saying about not wanting protection!

Phyllis, arming a teacher is just wrong in every way. Firstly, what if the teacher goes postal? I've seen it happen, more than once. and looking back, thank God they didn't have a gun. Secondly, putting a pistol in a teacher's hand so they can take on an intruder with an AR15 is just insanity. Bye-bye teacher, and then everyone else. Thirdly, if you do that, the nutjobs will just take to wearing flak jackets. Fourthly, you actually gave the sensible answer yourself. Take automatic and semi-automatic weapons like assault rifles, and handguns out of the hands of people who have no reason to have them!

No other civilised western nation has this problem, because they have sensible gun control. The teachers don't want their schools to be jails, the students don't want the schools to be jails, only those people who think they have a God given right to walk around carrying deadly weapons want the schools to be jails, so their "rights" aren't impinged. Well, the right to live is the most basic right there is. Change the law.

reply by Phyllis Stewart on 27-Feb-2018
Of course CHANGING THE LAW is what's needed. But until Congress agrees to do, I want guns in the schools, in the hands of rational people who know how and when to use them.

You obviously did not grow up with guns in your family. My dad was a policeman, and my wider family was filled with hunters. I learned gun safety as a child, and I was given lessons in shooting rifles and handguns on my grandma's farm where we could put up targets with no fear of hitting anything else but perhaps a tree in the distant woods.

You see gun users as going postal. That is farrrr less likely than having them act responsibly. Teachers would have to pass psych tests too.

You could probably throw a rope around every property within 1,000 square miles of me, and not find more than a handful of households that don't own guns (rifles, because handguns aren't allowed). That doesn't mean I need to go along with it. There is no reason, in my mind, for people to have guns. But I'm not advocating abolition in the US (although that would be the most sensible path). All I'm suggesting is teeniest bit of common sense, so you don't have a mass shooting a day. It's clear that the majority of teachers and students don't want it. And it's not going to achieve anything. The whackjob just mows them down outside the school, or on a bus, or at the cinema.

Craig, This is a very well written poem with great descriptive words and great imagery from your words. That is a very interesting word - fubar. Great job my friend! Blessings, Teri

Anacronym is a most cool word as are acronym and anachronism. I just like the flow and sound of those words. But then I see words, as sculpting material or notes for musical scores.

I stay out of the gun discussion because I see abolutely no use for any guns for anything at all. Does that mean I think human aggression will change anytime soon, if ever? Nope. The more people are 100% convinced they're right, the more aggressive, unjust and irrational their behaviour becomes. It's the human condition.

Anyway Australia has exemplary evidence of truth in action regarding responsible gun ownership so keep sounding the signal.

Great job, Craig. Looking forward to today's new word.

Gloria

Sounds similar to snafu. Situation normal all f****d up.

I think arming teachers seems out of place. Maybe putting in securiy guards and making everyone enter and exit the school by the front door might limit the unwanted visitors and weapons? It would free the teachers to focus on education and feel they are being protected too.

I hope the powers that be come up with an effective solution.

Good word for the day, and you described it well.

Hi Joy, yes - very similar in meaning to "snafu". The most obvious solution would also be the most effective - control the proliferation of guns, not control innocent people. Many thanks, Craig

I agree. To employ a tired phrase, Trump is addressing the symptom, not the disease. But that's his MO. Knee jerk. OK Corral High School is a knee jerk response. Why don't we just arm the kids and hope for the best?

Clearly, something must be done. But more guns become more fuel.

What happens when a teacher goes 'postal'?

Good work.

Peace, Lee

Well said. It seems that the whole situation is getting worse by the day.
How big a hole can that man dig himself into? The unfortunate thing is that he is taking the country down that hole with him.

That is very true, Sharon, unfortunately. Somehow someone (not Trump) needs to find a way to limit the damage. Let's hope they do, before it's irreparable.

Love you inspirational idea of "Word of the Day!" Your "Fubar" piece rings pretty accurate and well conceived in what's going on in today's news! The rhyme adds nicely to your piece. Good job!
