A sweet nostalgic piece, Bill! It's great that even old children's rides can still be enjoyed today by little ones. Especially liked your last verse:
"Today, however, beached here in the desert

faded blue and primer gray I've found

what swelled our nautic minds and filled our days

splashes only echoes of that splendid time"

I'd never seen such an attraction--a whale slide. If each venture cost just a dime, that must have really been in the past. I like the description of what happened to the poor whale ride--beached in the desert. It seems that the whale fueled the children's imaginations and attracted them to the slide. Interesting reminder of times past, and what could tickle a child's fancy. Excellent rhyme. judi

Oh I really loved this one. It was melancholy and nostalgic and had that feel we all know of the passing of youth and the things that may represent that to us. Reminded me of old pictures of abandoned amusement parks that always move me.

Bill, this was not promoted, but I broke my rule and reviewed it anyway, because it's so verrrry good. You really should have promoted this one so more would see it.

Some masterful lines and phrases follow... could have added more. You are REALLY good at rhyming poetry. You've got the alliteration thing going and a great theme behind this that we old folks relate to well.

the chilly pools once fed by crispy pipes
now worn and pitted holes reflecting heat

the rusty whale's back

beached here in the desert

faded blue and primer gray

splashes only echoes of that splendid time

Now, since I not only read (my pleasure) this poem but reviewed it for two measly cents, shouldn't you hurry up and review my chapter 35? Second half at least, where Gen. Boyd makes Charles look like the idiot he is.

I'm not going to post the best scene till Sunday, which is where Charles will have to put his lies up against testimony from the three Hampton girls. It's going to be a bloodbath. Charles will probably be run out of town by an angry mob. So stay tuned. :)

I think I confused you... I'm contagious. Chapter 35 IS NOW posted. It's Chapter 36 coming on Sunday. So you can enjoy 35 right now...and get money for doing so. Lucky you! :)

Imagination is a great thing. Now you have those memories to look back on. Probably has a lot to do with your love of whales.

Growing up and learning that the sources of our fondest fantasies is just that, a fantasy and nothing more, can be a sobering experience. This is especially true when the glaring truth is pointed out to you by someone you dare not argue with. Some truths reveal themselves to you by the simple act of your maturing to the point where the fantasy is obviously not true, could not possibly be true. You feel relieved to have worked this out before someone else reveals it to you, making you feel dumb and uninformed.

Absolutely marvellous artwork that complements your poem perfectly. It has gone old and splashes only echoes of that splendid time. Rhymes all the way.

This speaks memoirs of childhood days playing, riding, and felt adventure at the shark that stands deserted there; well worded, well done. Thank you for sharing this with us. WRITE, INSPIRE MAN CHANGE. DR ALCREATOR

Hi Bill. If you haven't seen "whale Rider" put out by a New Zealander about the mystical power of the whales for the Maori people, I believe you would enjoy it tremendously. It came out a few years ago and is probably on something like Netflix. Another awesome chapter in your book. What animal is next? Have you decided? As my German teacher would say after a good transition of the language,

Zehr gut, gut gemack ... probably not spelled right ... nice one Bill!

smiles ... Kiwi
