Yes, that sax solo is so recognizable within the first few notes! I really enjoy checking out your project to learn all of these obscure words. I wrote an ABC book of musical instruments and did lots of searching to come up with instrument name for some letters, but had not heard of a gobblepipe.

A short poem using a strong packaged image (around a not well-known word) to zero in on the point, with enough said in the starting line of: music most sublime... (great m sounds through that line with a complimentingly pleasing 's' too.)

Even though I didn't recognize the song... or the title, or the names... the sax riff, I recognized that as a sound I'd heard and enjoyed before.

I also enjoyed the tidbit of information on him only getting 27 pounds for the gig at the time that I peaked in on more of his information, which the only other thing that brought me some amusement (as an artist) was that he mentioned that the song annoyed him for being the flat and out of tune.

Could you imagine... having a poem that you write, and then read and think, bah, irritating how the flow is off, But that's the poem that ends up being recognized and attributed to you as something so well known.

I'm fairly sure he would have been commenting on the song in general and not his part in particular, but I get your drift. I have actually experienced more than once when I submitted a couple of poems near each other, and one has largely drawn yawns from reviewers, but the other one has received a warm response. The only thing is, it was the opposite to what I would have expected in terms of which got what!

Now obviously this guy is a fine musician, and I'm not, but nothing about the song sounds wrong to me. I would recommend if you're not familiar with Rafferty's music, and you are looking for something to put on in the background one day, look up the "City to City" album on Youtube and play it. It's really very good (of course it may not be to your taste).

Anyway, thanks for another great review, Turtle :)

    Cheers,
    Craig

Here, I rushed over thinking someone had finally invented the Google pipe and beaten me to the draw when I realized I was seeing what I wanted to see instead of what is there. Goggle pipe eh? LOL. I guess that goes with lots of gob on the reed or something. There's always the spit valve ya know. I used to hate when the sax players used their spit valves. Shudder.

Nonetheless, terrific job and another fun word from your awesome book of linguistic treasures.

Gloria

I used to play tenor horn in the school band, Gloria. I'm quite familiar with spit valves - yuck!

Thanks for the fun review :) Craig

Hi Craig. Gobble-pipe, eh? The saxophone is probably one of the most popular instruments and with good reason. Kudos to you. The image, the 5-7-5, and the music all combine for a stellar write. Very enjoyable. Marilyn

Thanks very much, Marilyn. Yet one more instrument I wish I could play - along with keyboard, drums...

LOL! I hear you. Sometimes I look at the guitar in the closet and just shut the door and put on a CD. Marilyn

Hi Craig,

It seems strange after two of my kids playing in school band, and my oldest dauhter is now a band teacher, I never heard the term, gobble-pipe. Breanne even played for several years with the Calgary Stampede Band of Outriders and that term never came up to me. I must ask her about that.

I do enjoy learning new music terms, so don't get me wrong. Todays word is a good one. I'm fascinated by it.

Joy xx

According to my book, Benny Goodman released a jazz/swing album in 1937 called "The Camel Caravan". The album included a booklet of notes on "The Language of Swing", and the definition given here was used in that book :) If it's good enough for Benny, it's good enough for me lol

A 5-7-5 that says it all. The word "gobble-pipe" actually makes more sense than 'saxaphone' does, as the gobble relates well to the saxaphones appearance and the fact that the player puts the instrument in his/her mouth (as if to gobble it). :)

Well done, Craig. Thanks for sharing another new word. ~~ Connie

Craig, This is a very well written 5-7-5 about Raphael Ravenscroft's music. You used very good descriptive words and very good imagery. Blessings, Teri

You did a great job Craig with so few syllables to work with on this 575. Your word choices are super. I like the picture--it is perfect. I really like Gerry Rafferty's music. Thanks for sharing. Jan

Jan, the guy in the picture is the guy mentioned in the poem - I forgot to mention that, and it isn't necessarily obvious :) Thanks for the great review - Craig

A very well-written fun 5-7-5 about the gobble pipe or better known as the saxophone. It seems the people give names to objects in the past with whatever comes to mind.

Much appreciated, Sandra. Yep, but is it any stranger than calling a guitar an "axe"? Many thanks, Craig
