Wow. This is a very powerful and heart-wrenching poem. So beautifully written to share the story of your uncle. His quote, "there is still beauty in a sunrise," and how you were able to weave it into your poem, made your poem the winner in my opinion. Wish I had a six-star to share!

    Hello Cindy,
So very honored by your exceptional rating and heartfelt review.
I so often think of my uncle - although I never had the pleasure to meet him.
As a mother myself, I can only imagine the heartbreak of my grandmother, but she, like my father, never expressed any bitterness outwardly...

    Thank you again!

Nicely done, a great tribute that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this countries freedom. I just hope that we are not taking that freedom to far in some cases. Good luck on this and have a great day.

This is a very touching tribute to a fallen soldier. God bless him for his sacrifice. Today is the day we honor those who fought and died for our freedom.

What a wonderful tribute. Heartbreaking at the same time. My Uncle Vernie died in WW2. He was in the Navy. Only 22yrs old. I believe it was the Normandy Invasion. All I know was he was soon to come home when the Japanese torpedoed his ship. I wish I had been able to meet him. Your beautiful poem highlights the true intention of Memorial Day. For all of us to pay tribute to those who gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedom we have that should never be taken for granted. God bless you and your family.

"There is still beauty in the sunrise," is a remarkable line for someone incarcerated in a PoW camp guarded by Japanese soldiers of WW2, when one considered what hell passed before his eyes every day it rose. While one obviously feels sorrow for all those who drowned I think perhaps the greatest sorrow should be reserved for the skipper of the Snook who surely had no idea of what his target contained.

I rejoice that your father felt able to welcome the exchange student into his home. there are people here who would not buy a Japanese car because of what happened in WW2.

This is a fine suite of poems in the 5-7-5 form, just right for Memorial Day.

    Hello Jim,
The quote, "There is beauty in a sunrise," served a dual purpose: my father's family knew not only that "Bodie" was still alive, but that he could still see..." Letters home were so scarce, and there were only certain things the POWs could write. That quote by my uncle has always moved me...

Oh...and one more thing: our Japanese exchange student's father was a guard at the Japanese Emperor's palace during WWII.

Thank you for your thoughtful and kind review...

This work has reached the exceptional level

The sentiment in the poem is heroism. It tells of courage, strength, sacrifice and determination.
The writing here is incredible and the message inspirational. I guess one of the few good things to come out of war is the heroes it creates. And these men were all heroes.
A great tribute to all soldiers, past and present.

Your suite of 5-7-5 poems is a beautiful, touching tribute to your uncle and to
all of the men who suffered such cruelty.
