You're so right that one hears the woodpecker long before we see him. And you would think the poor little bird would have a headache the way he drills (like your "tatooing") with his beak!

One does wonder if there are any repercussions from all that tapping. Many thanks for sharing my poem, lyenochka.

This is wonderful. Great job. I like your concept here. The poem itself is beautifully written with charming artwork. Good word choices that flow well. Much luck in the contest if it hasn't reached deadline yet. Marilyn

A beautiful two-stanza poem, that reminds this reader of similar experiences, but you've described it so poetically. The details make it vivid and eloquent. I loved reading this and will think of it each time I hear a woodpecker. I especially loved the line: "The tap-tap echo like a tolling bell/ does not recede but lingers on" How lovely! Good luck to you in this contest. MM

I love this poetry form... It has a pleasing esthetic to it. The message is absolutely pristine in the way it reads without missing a beat. The image is sweet! Yours, diana

Excellent Poem! The author's words are creative, interesting and
descriptive. The artwork is perfect and compliments both the
theme and words of this poem.

-Very nice artwork and presentation, RodG.
-Notes are appreciated.
-The Downy Woodpecker is one of
the birds we get, and is so enjoyable.
-You wrote a good poem for the contest.
-The imagery is very effective:
"tattooing with his beak"
-I also like the ending when he
"begins anew
to play."
-Good luck in the contest.

Hello Rod,
An excellent poem, exact to the form
in syllables and rhyme with very fine imagery
I think it would take quite a bit to gorge the woodpecker
Perfect match of painting to poem
Well done
Robert

You did a good job with a difficult style, Rod. I enjoyed reading it as I like all birds. Your picture is a great choice to pair with your well-chosen words. I like the style. It worked well for you. I do like the rhyme at the end of each verse. Best wishes. Jan

Hello Anon
This is a great write. Well done. I enjoy any work were the writer has paid close attention to their word choice and, in particular, expressed themselves in a recognized form. I think, for me, it is the measure of a writer: to use the form to channel or focus their thoughts. Really, this is a lovey work.
The double meaning of tattoo, for example - as both the sound made and as in the physical 'needling' of the bark - this is a wonderful example of thoughtfulness of vocabulary.
Well done: you deserve biscuits with your tea as an added reward for your efforts.
I wish you the very best with your writing
cheers
phill

Thank you so much, phill, for your wonderful comments about ?a Woodpecker,? especially my choice of words. This is the first time I have written a deciquain, so I really appreciate for comments. I?d love biscuits with my afternoon tea, but I really welcome the six-star bonus. Anonymous no longer. Rod
