You're so right that one hears the woodpecker long before we see him. And you would think the poor little bird would have a headache the way he drills (like your "tatooing") with his beak!

A beautiful two-stanza poem, that reminds this reader of similar experiences, but you've described it so poetically. The details make it vivid and eloquent. I loved reading this and will think of it each time I hear a woodpecker. I especially loved the line: "The tap-tap echo like a tolling bell/ does not recede but lingers on" How lovely!
