Being a teacher, I absolutely feel your poem. It's sad yet full of hope. Working with kids beat those 180 days. You went almost full cycle in this poem. I would divide the poem into stanzas to give it more strength.

For me it wasn't the US army, but my UK experience in the Royal Marines was followed by teacher training and I had similar rueful thoughts as you over that career. What worried me then and still does now, long after I retired, was all those teachers for whom life has just been a short walk across a classroom, from looking at the blackboard to writing on it.
At least you and I saw something of the world and the folks in it before we started pretending we new all about it.

In my opinion, this personal view was realistic in its smooth delivery, even with its slightly uneven spots, which are easily corrected by reading the work aloud several times, to ensure the "sing/song" effect of rhyming rhythm. I found the subtly of the image extremely effective in the presentation...

Excellent poem for the rhyming contest. Your poem has a good flow and rhyming scheme. I guess we all have to make a full circle before we realize we did not have it that bad the first time.
