I truly enjoy how you meld geography and history in your poem. We can hear the lament of an old Salish Indian in the Speaker's voice.

I spend a fair amount of time in the Bitterrroot, my dad lives there at the base of Blodgett Canyon. It's kind of shocking to know that things like the forgery happened - it is so corrupt. It was Garfield who engineered that, before he became president and he was a senator or something. Thanks Rod, as always, for reading my poems. One of these days I'll try to write something uplifting :))

We are both from the West and have strong ties to our birthlands. I hope you are forming a collection of these poems you have written about Montana. I assume you have read all of A.B. Guthries?s novels (e.g.?The Big Sky). He?s probably Montana?s best known writer. Rod

Lovely free verse Carol. I don't know Bitterroot but your words here are very descriptive. Nearly every line of this piece makes good use of both simile and metaphor. 'That's how the Flathead lost the Bitter Root - Through a forgery. Chief Jocko better' - must look up this Bitter Root and Chief Jocko'. Very well written and a good read. Warm regards Dorothy xx
