Ha! I was struck with the title, because I love and will sure miss summer! But you've taken this pic and penned the perfect story to match it. Very good! I hope this wins for you Rod!

Thank you so much for the great review of ?Summer Dreaming? and those six bright stars. The picture did indeed inspire the story.

Nostalgic and sweet this reminiscence of a simpler time and one always had to do the daisy thing-it was a must but we seemed to predetermine the answer at times-Ha. Seems like a contest winner to me.

Ah, yes. Those halcyon days of our youth were often centered around trying to figure out and come to grips with those 'odd 'urges we'd never felt before.'
I'll also agree, farmwork is hard work. The days are grueling and sometimes long, depending on the size of the farm.
Every summer from 1972 to 1977, my two younger brothers and I spent three months helping our Grandpa Cook on his hog farm in Eaton, Ohio.
It'll make you grow up, that's for sure.
Good story--very well thought out.
Best wishes to you in the voting.

outa should be outta...
I love this story! This is my favorite part:
Like whenever I visited with Sadie Ann Pruitt over the split-rail fence that separated our farms. She'd smile under that bonnet of hers and I'd get all red-faced and squirmy.
That girl could talk, but I could only listen. Then I'd run wild through Gramps' fields and dream about her all night.
Takes me back to those younger years of my life. Thanks for writing this...

I'm a big fan of Norman Rockwell and have always appreciated his philosophy of the way life should be. I think you have worded your short story to fit Rockwell's art quite well. Good luck in the contest.

Well, looking at the voting booth with your short story, you're kickin' but. You deserve to win.

"outa" should be "outta". Coming of age stories can make interesting reading. This one begins on a farm with gramps. Seems you did not understand that little trinket boys undertake called puberty. At the end of the story, you come to the realization "Sadie" did not love you. Oh well, better luck next time in that department. Somehow, those daisy petals never lied, did they?

This is a really well written 150 word story written in response to the contest prompt. Your prose is so poetic -- "all red-faced and squirmy" is so good! So is "run wild through Gramps' fields and dream about her all night." Gramps, Rufus, Sadie Ann and your narrator all come to life so vividly is this short piece. Again, just well done! Great ending! Wonderful title and pic too!
