Earl, this is a great Hero theme poem. Your rhyme was excellent as you followed General Custer's timeline. You should do the presidents that would be an interesting book.

Loved this! The rhyming scheme is fun and the pace goes perfectly with it. It has a very fun feel to it and was really easy to read, though I didn't want it to end.

But we still live with the fall-out of that battle and many others with the proud native Americans. Who was right? Who were the real "savages?" My own heart still hurts over these questions and the devastation of the culture. Have we learned anything? I think not. Yet - your words resonate with the history we have been taught. Judy

A very good poem about a very twisted man. He went west to fight Indians because he thought the fame would help his quest to become president. He had his sights on the white house.

Maybe delve into some details of the horrors he endured at that last battle--his thoughts as he saw the horde of "savages," the pain of his wounds before he died, that sort of thing. I believe a poem should make a reader feel something. While this one tells a story, it's one we all know, so a few lines of gore or regret or pain or valor or stubbornness will bring it closer to the heart for a reader.
Just some things to consider.
