Last April we had to have our beloved dachshund, Tippee, put down due to renal failure.
She was 14-years-old.
One day she was fine and the next, in a coma.
It was such a hard thing to have to do, but she was suffering quietly.
There was nothing the vet could do to save her.
I miss her bright spirit everyday.
To those of us who have pets they are much more than merely animals. They are a part of our family and it's painful to have to say goodbye.
Best of luck to you in the contest.

Oh I feel for you Dean. Nearly an anniversary for sweet Tippee's absence. Renal failure seems to be very common in pets. I am in the process of documenting memories of my past 9 cats and renal failure is a recurring theme.
    Thanks so much for reviewing.

That is a very good entry for this contest. Having to put a pet to sleep is incredibly hard. I am sorry for your loss, and I know how hard that is. Thanks for sharing. Bill

Thanks for reviewing, Bill. I think we are all softies about our pets.

A tight story in only seventy words and it has a nice little catch at the end. I wish you well concerning your entry in this contest. I'd say you have a good chance. Best wishes.

This seventy-word story, I'm Only Seventeen, cuts to the quick as I imagine my own dear lab's final thoughts as I patted her head and the vet pushed the plunger.

I went with my dad's black lab when her time was up. It is so sad but at least we are with them when they go.

Hello Author, This is such a sad story. I was very surprised at the end, it was such a sharp twist! I was sure that I was looking at a horrid story of a kidnapped girl, not that these last moments aren't difficult enough for both sides. :(

Yes, it was somewhat bleak... in both story lines. I prefer to write happy or funny, but I do go to dark places sometimes. Sorry to be depressing, so thank you very much for reviewing. Have a lovely day!

You did an exceptional job with this one. I kept hoping it wasn't what it seemed -the calling card of flash fiction writes- but then, when I realized what it really was, I didn't want that, either. Great work here.
And good luck in the contest with it.

I'm sad to read of the loss of your beloved Tillypuss. Seventeen years is quite the journey together, so her absence must be immense. xo

When I was writing this I felt really close to Tilly, so her death felt very recent, but she has actually been gone for a few years now. She was the best cat I ever had (shssshh, don't tell Cubby, my present cat, who I adore also of course. I'll let her think that a cat in the hand is worth 2 under the bush.)

Hi there, contest entrant
We had to put our little cat down at 16 so I understand completely how hard it is to make the decision to end a pet's life. this is beautifully written and should do really well. Good luck.

MSN had a blurb about what Vets hate most...people who have sick pets put down, but leave them to die alone among strangers...bravo, Greg.
Excellent seventy word flash.

Oh that would be too cruel for the pet. I always ask the vet to come to my house so my cat can die in familiar surroundings and not get overstressed.

Hi there, this a great little flash story with a surprise ending. It's perfect for the contest and I hope it will do well. Here the cat does seem to know what is going to happen. It is not nice at all. I've been there a few times, and it really hurts. All the best. Ulla:)))

Pets get right into our hearts and it is very sad when their time is up.
