Reading is always great for children and adults. I like how the
girl is so dreaming to read. You have the sweet brother reading
to her. I remember how I read to my daughters about 200 books
a week and then again and again. Brown Bear and Nursery Rhymes
were my daughters' favorites. Monica went into gifted at five.
Annie loved to play more than read. She's in college now, studying
education as her courses. Happy Easter with you and your family.

Preschool is such an exciting time these days for children because so many four-year-olds are indeed ready to read. Thank you so much for your wonderful praise of I WANT TO READ and that galaxy of bright stars. Rod

What a wonderful scene! Pete is a good big brother to be so patient with his little sis and willling to teach her.

The dialogue works well.

Good luck in the contest!

Thank you so much, Coco Jane, for your kind praise of Pete and my poem I WANT TO READ. You might be interested to know that Sis became quite a fishergirl when she got older (I posted a poem about her earlier titled FISHERGIRL). ROD

I went and babysat my friend's kids. She reads to them and is very hands on. When I went over her four year sat down and blew me away with how much he knew how to read. He was no pro, he still struggled, but I don't think I was reading like that at four. It takes a lot of work but in the end it does indeed pay off.

I am truly amazed how advanced pre-schoolers are these days. My granddaughter, the real model for "Sis" in this poem, was reading at four. Many thanks for sharing I WANT TO READ. Rod

What a delightful poem about the joys of reading and of brotherly love! Patience is a virtue that few children possess but, on the other hand, the impetuousness of youth is quite refreshing!

I am so pleased you recognized one of my themes in I WANT TO READ, that patience is a virtue. Petey, the brother, appears in many of my other posted poems. He even patiently taught a young female friend how to fish. Rod

A beautiful poem which I really connected with because this little girl in the poem could be describing me when I was a child. I didn't have an older brother to read stories to me but my mum would and I was desperate from an early age to be able to read by myself because I adored books and still do. I feel lost if I don't have a book with me on a journey or on holiday and read every night before bed. They're so comforting and transport you out of your life into someone else's for a while. Love the choice of theme and the painting you chose to illustrate your work is divine. X

Hi Haley. I really want to thank you for your wonderful comments about I WANT TO READ. I also enjoyed hearing your story about learning to read. Glad you like the artwork. It inspired the poem although the story is based on my own two kids. Thank you, too, for that six-star bonus! Rod

Dear contest author,

What a fabulous submission. The little boy looks like my brother as a child. It drew me right in. We loved reading as a family growing up. You've told a wonderful tale that took me back to childhood, and improved my day. Thank you for that.

LG

When I started school, I was already reading Zane Grey Western magazine and the hand-me-down True Story magazines my mom received from her family...and the teachers whined. "There is supposed to be a system involved!" Too late. Excellent poem...

Thank you so much for calling I WANT TO READ "excellent." I, too, loved to read Zane Grey when I was young, but I learned to read only after I started first or second grade. I read and still own almost all of Louis L'Amour's novels. Rod

It's amazing how quickly kids will learn things when they have older siblings in school already learning new things! Jealousy can sometimes be the king of motivators! Yahoo! :)

Good story. Those girls have a worthy, but difficult job ahead. The little one has a strong desire to read, but you may be a bit too optimistic. And maybe not.
We all speculate on the unknown.
Best wishes for your contest entry,
Don
