Excellent poem about what our public service men and women sacrifice daily. The poem was well structured and flowed and rhymed well. Good luck on the contest.

Your poem is somewhat irregular; but that actually fits the theme, for so is a policeman's (or police woman's) life, with a new crisis possible at any moment throughout each shift. The stress is inevitably continual, varying only in intensity from moment to moment, its effects slowly eroding the fabric of even the best personal relationships away from the job.

Many who serve this way are ex-military, using their training to protect their country's citizens at home after doing so abroad. We all owe them our respect, gratitude, and cooperation, as well as support in times of sorrow, for what they must endure on a daily basis. Simply giving them a smile and a nod as they drive past can brighten an otherwise dreary day, so they know they are appreciated for their sacrifice.

Well done, and aptly illustrated.

I can't tell you how I appreciate your noticing what you did about the 'irregularity' of it. That was by design, and I kept hoping someone would catch it and 'get' it, and you did!!

I couldn't agree more about your assessment of these people who put their lives on the line for us. They are a rare breed, for sure, and deserve our gratitude and appreciation.

I love this review of yours. Thank you for taking the time to write; you've provided such a great start to my day. xo

You are welcome, and I am glad to have brightened your day. Your post is an important tribute to those who spend their lives in constant risk to "serve and protect" the rest of us.

I live in a neighborhood where, at night, I (too often) hear one or more shots fired -- once, several times in rapid succession right in front of my apartment building. Needless to say, I'm happy to see police every time they are visible in the vicinity. I make a point of knowing each of my neighbors in this building, all of whom are decent people from diverse backgrounds. -- Mike

Wow, Mike. That is dire. I'm sending you warm thoughts for your safety and for those of your loved ones, as well.

Thank you. I much appreciate your caring thoughts.

I am alone here, a thousand miles from family. My wife died of cancer caused by aspartame, the artificial sweetener in the diet soda she was drinking in hope of losing weight. She gained weight instead, and the cancer was so aggressive that it took her before she even knew she was ill. That was eighteen years ago next month.

Aspartame is a deadly poison originally invented to kill ants. The sweetness attracts the workers, who bring it to the queen, who then dies from it, causing the colony to collapse when no more eggs are laid. The FDA kept it out of food for humans until someone from the manufacturer joined the FDA, after which they approved it. They are loyal to money, not the public they are supposed to be serving.

Don't drink "regular" soda either, as it is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (likely from GMO corn laced with glyphosate, a known carcinogen), which is harmful to your liver (and would be even without glyphosate). Do not be fooled if the label says "corn sugar" because that is a deliberate deception to fool people waking up to the risk from consuming HFCS.

I don't eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), so I have no such health issues. Instead, I eat totally organically for just five dollars per day.

Wow!! I did not know that about aspartame, but I can't say it surprises me. I stay away from soda, as well. Water is my favorite drink.

I hope your good health lasts and lasts.
reply by WalkerMan on 17-Apr-2019
You are wise to avoid soda. Water is definitely better, but not with added fluoride, as that not only does NOT prevent tooth decay, but also does weaken bones and even lowers intelligence. Hitler ordered it be given to concentration camp inmates to keep them docile. It's actually a highly toxic industrial byproduct, but governments were duped (and bribed) into putting it into drinking water because it is too dangerous to store anywhere. (The NATURAL fluoride found in ground water in a few places is a DIFFERENT fluoride compound.) Russia, Israel, and many other countries now ban fluoridation of drinking water, and the list is
    growing as countries wise up.

Bottled water is not the answer, as it generally is just tap water from somewhere else. Distillation does not remove fluoride, as its vapor travels with the steam and condenses into the output. Most filters don't remove it either. Reverse osmosis combined with activated charcoal reduces fluoride better than other methods, but does not get rid of all of it. That's why people are now pushing for it to be banned. I use only reverse osmosis water, which costs me only twenty-five cents per gallon where I buy my organic groceries, IF I bring my own jugs. Also, if you read the warning on a tube of fluoridated toothpaste, you'll understand why I don't use that either.

Thank you for the well wishes.

Thank you. It is my way of thanking Him for helping me prevent the head-on collision that could have taken me and a dozen others over twenty-nine years ago, as I explained in my "Icy Blind Curve Encounter" post in October, 2017 (still in my Portfolio). Since then I have lost nearly everything I once held dear -- EXCEPT my faith and willingness to help others. Good health has been my reward, allowing me to focus outward rather than inward. I thank Him for every new day, and also wrote "You Are There" -- my very first post upon joining FanStory in late April of 2016 -- as an expression of my gratitude. (It's at the bottom of Page 2 of my Portfolio.)

I had Tom and the gang move a poem I misposted as a story over to the poetry side...A book I read twice way back and later was Choirboys by Wambaugh...supports your verses...excellent poem.

This is very well done and speaks to the reality that police officers face on a daily basis. Theirs is a very stressful and traumatic job.

The rhymes are pretty good as well.

Best wishes in the contest.

This was a great read, unknown writer. I like the way you point out all the things these people do for society and how they sacrifice their time, their families, and sometimes their lives. Well done and good luck in the contest.

Thank you, 24chas. These people amaze me with their selflessness and dedication at the expense of so much. I appreciate your words of encouragement.

This is a good healthy look at police work.
Stanza 3 has good examples. Maybe the next part about "these scenes..." should be the last line of stanza 3 to complete the couplet--?

Consider adding something about the job being worth the sacrifice--saving a life, reuniting a family, getting a criminal off the street. Just a thought.

I can only judge the content of the poem, not the form, I am not a poet. The story is direct and to the point and puts forth a not too popular position, Blue Lives Matter.

    Very good point, Rikki66.
In the end, though, I think the truth is that every life matters.

    Thank you for your review.

That is the truth but people care only for their small world view.

Excellent really - and I'm glad you mentioned the family - the children. Apparently that is a big problem for some officers. The long hours, the separation. But then this could be said for the military too I guess.
Good job.

Yes. They put the public's needs above their own. There is bound to be personal fallout from that kind of sacrifice.

Thank you for your heartfelt review.

When you experience the hard side of human nature it is very hard to comprehend, especially when it involves children. There is so much that the Police have to face on a daily basis that the average man in the street would never realised, a fine write, love Dolly x

It is so very true, Dolly. They are fighting on so many battlefields, on the job and off. I marvel at anyone who can be that brave and selfless. Ditto for soldiers.

Using blue as a link between uniform colour and emotion is a nice touch. Your story poem very clearly shows the sacrifice and personal toll made when called to 'serve and protect'.
