Willie: wonderful poem about a lonely lady who has been forgotten. I like how the walker made her day. We need to be there for others in our busy world. I help many older people by bringing them flowers and homemade banana bread. Great awareness. Everyone is important. flylikeaneagle

So touching and emotional. I can see why this won the contest. It is truly sad when one's family precedes you in death for the death of children is outside the natural order and how heartbreaking and devastating it is. Thanks for sharing this. xoxo

Hi Willie, Congratulations on winning the contest. You created a wonderful old character in this piece. She's so lonely, she calls you up to her porch.
I'll bet there are many seniors who have nobody to talk to, not even their own children. The only ones who pay attention to them are the nurses at the "home". My father fought in the war, and now is bored to death in a special care facility for vets. He's safe, and he gets 3 good meals/day, along with a bedtime snack. We don't have to worry about him getting out in the winter and freezing to death. But it's like he's a prisoner. Old age sucks.
All seniors have a story. Some are really interesting, too, if we just give a few minutes of our time. Someday we'll be sitting in their wheel chair!
Nicely penned!
cheers
Kimbob

Unfortunately, there are many people who feel like this.

Very sweet poem. Beautiful and picturesque. I can see her somewhere near a marsh on an old cabin just sitting around waiting for someone to chat and relax with and wanting more. Thanks for the inspiration.

Congratulations on your winning contest entry, Willie!
Your heartbreaking, tear-jerking poem about a forsaken elderly old woman has a hopeful ending. (It was kind of you to give her a friend.)

Congratulations on the contest win! I don't get on every day and must have missed the vote...but I can see why you'd be selected number one! The secret I have learned as the years go rushing by is one never feels "old"--- Oh, it happens--as any mirror will affirm. Still, what we all feel, regardless of age is worthless when we are not acknowledged or listened to, isolated when no one comes to visit anymore, a bother when our bodies will not bend with the suppleness of then... This made me smile through tears. I spent my life caring for "old ladies" and "old men" as an RN working in Nursing Homes...and how their eyes lit up when
a rare visitor came or a staff member took that extra moment to listen --truly listen! Great write....Karenina

So true, Karenia. I am 81 years young and except for some aching bones, I feel like I am 21. Thank you for your very nice comments and five stars.

A beautiful poem that made me cry. There are far too many "lonely old ladies" these days. Society goes about its business and never sees the real point of life all around it. I especially liked the sixth stanza. Good photo choice for theme. Sorry I don't have a six star to offer.

Thank you for the five stars. Just knowing you think it is worth a six is good enough for me.

This lovely verse touches the heart.
We, in our society, don't appreciate the elderly for their years of wisdom. But, we should.
Very nice win, well deserved.
