I enjoyed your poem, Willie. I understand why it placed first in the contest. Your words flow well with great rhymes. Your story told is poignant. Too many elders are like this old lady. It takes little of our time to visit with them and make their day. Thanks for sharing. Jan

A very well-written poem about the lonely old lady who longs for a little attention and when a stranger takes the time to listen to her story she becomes overwhelmed with joy.

Congratulations on winning the contest.

I had to stop crying before I could write my review. This piece is so touching and sad--but also uplifting because there was ONE person willing to make her day. No wonder this poem won!

This poem is a reminder to take the time to get to know older people. It is easy to say, "Oh, well, they have family to visit and help them out." But this poem reminds the reader that sometimes they do not, since spouses die, children die, and wars like Vietnam happen. Thank you for a gentle rhymed poem that reminds us to be compassionate.

This is a most touching poem, Willie. There are many such lonely old people in this world. I very much enjoy that while you relayed her sorrowful life, and it wasn't maudlin with self-pity but rather acceptance of her lot.

A fine, fine poem written in excellent metre and rhyme and I can see why it won the contest. Congratulations to you.

Many thanks to you for sharing.

There's a lot of loneliness among the elderly, especially among shut-ins. I like how you kept the focus on the older woman, instead of making this a diatribe to "visit the lonely." (although it's implied.) And her brave front about being alone. Well done.

This is a very touching poem because it is an unfortunate fact that there are too many lonely people in this world. It is easy to warm their hearts by just smiling and sharing a little time with them. Meals On Wheels volunteers connect with many lonely elderly people every day. Best wishes with your entry!

This poem tells a story about how an unselfish deed brought good karma to the giver, and he also benefited, I'm sure, from the elderly woman's company. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Poet!
I read your poem yesterday but today I couldn't find it anymore..it was destiny that you would review my wee poem and I would checked out your name and portfolio.

I don't know how much is fact or fiction but this is a heart jerking story.

I think it is very sad if one member of an old couple dies leaving the other behind. My mamma died 11 years before my papa ' but luckily I was there to fill the void.

It's also not right that parents should experiece the loss of a child due to an illness or due to something horrible like war.

We should remember that life is a circle and one day we will be old and maybe alone too...and we will long for a kind word from someone...so we should look out for the elderly ..our grandparents or even an elderly in the park sitting alone on a bench and stop, notice them and exchange a few words ..it would make their day.

You did a great job with the rhyming too.
