It's always a great feeling to read such a fabulous poem that is so artfully crafted, and then see that it won the contest it was entered into. This is one of the best, most descriptive, poems I've read in a long time, and I honestly felt like I was standing on that shore with you in the middle of that rather nasty storm. Some poems paint pictures, and yours surely did! Well done, and a very well deserved win!

A poem about a storm. The angry hornets seem out of place in a storm. I like the "seagulls careen in cloudless skies." Fascinating works. Thank you.

Very beautifully written! You've used wonderful imagery in this piece. I especially like that it's not just imagery for the eyes, but for other senses too like hearing and touch. The feel of the large, pelting raindrops and the sound of the harsh thunder are especially vivid and well captured. I also like the way you describe the storm rolling in suddenly and fiercely and then disappearing just as quickly, leaving everything peaceful again. Really well done! This was truly a pleasure to read! :)

I am so pleased you enjoyed the sensory imagery of SUMMER STORM, Jenna. Because those storms come so frequently here by Lake Michigan, I can easily picture each scene in my mind?s eye. Many thanks for your kind praise. Rod

This is a wonderfully composed poem, Rod. Congratulations for winning the contest. Well described. Many good lines within. I particularly like:
"I can't outrace the sheets of rain
that blind my view and batter me."
and
"Cyclones of sand zig-zag the beach
like angry hornets in a swarm."

I love a thunderstorm. The stronger the better. I guess this is what Eddie Rabbit meant when he sang I love a rainy night. I love storms and I'm not the only one.

A fine storm poem Rod.

Your commentary transports us to the travellers mind who one imagines to be wearing combat gear.

Nice job mostly friend very well written.

John

Thank you, John, for sharing SUMMER STORM. indeed, the Speaker would be wise to wear combat gear, at least a helmet, during such storms. Rod

Excellent poem and great contest entry. I like this stanza. Very clever. Way out beyond a bleak expanse
forked lightning strikes the wind-torn lake.
Then deaf'ning thunder rips to shore.
It hurts my ears, my eyelids ache.
