Good story. You sound like the kind of person that I would like to know. Positivity is my thing, even when I don't feel it inside. Your life did a complete 180 after the tornado episode. Sounds like you are a much stronger, more balanced person. Mature is probably the word I am looking for. You have a maturity that most people never seem to reach.
I thoroughly enjoyed your story. I hope you include writing in your future plans. You are good at it.

Nicely stated - a turnaround in thinking, planning. Interesting that the surgery was for tonsilitis - didn't know that could be that serious. Us kids all had ours out early in life. In fact, each of us got to choose a toy or gift we'd like - to take the sting out of surgery I guess. I still have the old doll.

On adults, it's considered major surgery, or at least it was back then (1976) Plus, because I was an aspiring operatic soprano, they had to be especially careful. I was physically incapacitated for an entire week, and then, after that, it took a year for a complete enough recovery for me to sing again. But all that paled in contrast to being killed by a tornado! Everything's relative, right?! Oy.
Now, that doll, Gail: is it the kind that would be worth a fortune these days?

NO, dolls are not selling hardly at all. I also dabble in collectables and antiques and the young people just aren't interested in the same things these days. I do have a very old bear that might bring a good price. Had him since I was about 7.

Life is full of motivational moments, if we only saw them at the right time and took advantage of them when we should. Your story sounds almost too storybook. Inspiration, optimism and purpose seem just too difficult for most of us. Nevertheless, this was an interesting read. Best wishes.

I shall be telling this with a gloat
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
a twister and a sore throat
made the waves that rocked the boat

That is a very good story that you wrote. It was descriptive and I could imagine what it was like in that ditch while the tornado swirled around you. After that experience, I think it would have made me motivated too!

What a very interesting, highly imaginative, and creatively entertaining tale you've woven to catch our attention and captive possibilities ... not all good one, either.
How happy it made this reader that the main character got realize her goals, even if only in her fantasies! Is it not said, "Before it becomes reality, it has to first be imagined."
Good stuff the judges should be giddy over; personally, I loved it!

I asked him how he kept up his ever-present optimism during that period. It seems the other patients were a big part of keeping a proper perspective.
"For one thing", he said, "I could always see someone in that large hospital who was far worse off than me."
The other thing was the patients refused (mostly) to feel sorry for themselves. They would openly kid each other over who was the ugliest (this being the burn victims).
