Aren't children the best!! LOL, at least you can laugh about it when you tell the story to your great-grandchildren ... it will take that long to get over it!! lol. I loved this story and congratulations on your win. It was well deserved! :)) Sandra xxx

Having spent quite a few years teaching, I found this entertaining and not without a grain of truth! As deputy head of the Junior School, I occasionally had to fill in for teachers when the relief roster drew a blank. When those occasions landed me in a class of 5-year olds, I invariably acquired a new level of respect and admiration for the regular Junior Primary teachers! Had I been the Pope, I'd have awarded them all a sainthood!

Hello Earl
First things first, congratulations on bagging three trophies and being the coveted winner of the contest.
I can understand what you must have faced in the process of teaching kindergarten, didn't you wish you had ten eyes?
This is well written and worth every trophy.

I remember my experiences (in )substitute teaching
Best,
Sylvia

My son in law and one of my best friends are substitute teachers and your story fits right in with the ones that I have heard from them. I was an Instructor in the Navy and that's a whole different story.

I was nodding my head several times while reading this. I used to substitute teach, too. Kindergarten can be a challenge. But they are also usually the best at wanting to hear any book you can read. The new (or relatively new) emphasis on daily oral language, otherwise known as pick-your-corner-of-the-room play-time, can also mean a ton of extra clean-up for a teacher. The cookie fiasco does not sound like your fault. But the fact that the children knew it, too, is funny. I think with the following line:
Awww crap, I thought
You might want to add a comma after Awww and then a period after 'thought' and that's it there.

This piece was very entertaining and well written with numerous humorous anecdotes to hold a reader's attention. For me, it was especially compelling because I too have undergone the trials and tribulations of substitute teaching.

Amen to that! I used to be a substitute teacher, and I took 1st grade one -- just once! Then, Middle School. Never again. But I did like the high school. Seemed like I always got the boys' classes. I can relate to your kindergarten experience. Even so, it's funny now. hahaha.

-I can see why you won the contest, Earl.
-It is an excellent story with a good image, too.
-Having taught H.S. for many years,
this was particularly humorous to me.
-I always said I would never
substitute and I never did!
-The descriptions of shop class are classic-
calling out over the loudspeaker
for your room is too much.
-Then there is kindergarten.
-I like how you begin this section.
-I enjoy kids, but I wouldn't have known what
to do with those small children, either!
-If this wasn't true, I would
say you had to have made it up.
-The "line fiasco" is hilarious.
-Your reaction to her saying she
was line leader was classic:
"obviously you're not allowed
to fire kindergarten line leaders."
-I think the moral of the story is you can take
a marine out of the corps, but can't put
him in a kindergarten classroom.
-Thanks for sharing your story.

Hi Earl

You know what? I remember that in kindy I though a tantrum because a boy I liked was put in the other class and not mine. I remember being the right little bioytch when things didn't go my way. What do you mean I can't slide down the slide backwards? laughing. Fantastic story. I can see why it got first place in the contest. Well done!

xoxo Kiwi
