Congratulations on getting third place, Kay, that was a horror and a half! You poor thing, did the car driver get jailed for drunk driving? I hope so and the keys thrown away! What a nightmare. I hope you got loads of compensation too. Both legs!! You are such a strong lady to have coped with that. Well done, my friend. Sandra xxx

Sandra, Thanks for reading. Not my genre. Still, it was true and a horror. $250,000 which was a lot back in '82. How was your holiday and what are you doing for Christmas? Love, Kay XX

We had a lovely time, but the humidity was too high for me, my asthma played up and my bad leg was perpetually swollen. But I didn't let it spoil our holiday. I'll write about the lovely things we saw after Christmas. As for Christmas, we'll probably be on our own, I miss being the one who had everyone come for Christmas day, but they've grown, and have children and in-laws now. The saying, 'A son is yours till he gets a wife, a daughter is yours for the whole of your life.' Not that my boys don't see me, it's just not the same anymore. It's the same with Graham's three sons. Graham is downloading loads of Christmas films. What will you do now Lea isn't with you? I hope you won't be alone. xxxx

Hello my friend Sandra, Yes, alone I will be, except for Toby dog. I don't feel like people anyway. We are in trouble in two states fighting massive fires that can't be contained. Sixty-nine fires out of control. Millions of acres of land lost plus houses. Never seen this before. The men are exhausted, NZ has flown in their firefighters to relieve ours. It is scary. Looks like end of days. Is your leg swelling where you had your knee replaced? We have no humidity and that is the problem, no rain. I guess the kids have to grow up and grow away. Ma and Pa left at home for Christmas. It is a love/hate situation sometimes. I still miss the great fun we had oodles ago. Glad you wrote to me, I miss you. Much love, Kace.

This is an amazing story. I wish it were fiction. Sounds as though you have come through it stronger than ever but I'm sure many days are still an uphill climb. You write very well, holding the reader's attention until the very last word. Great job!

This story gave me chills. What a horrible experience, but at least you lived. I can't imagine the pain you felt, i certainly understand why hospitals scare you. Thanks for sharing.

OMG, This really was a horror story. I sometimes wonder if these so called doctors really do have compasion for their patients. It seems for some they are subjected to endless pain and suffering to further another's career and status. I am suspect being a nurse didn't make it any easier knowing what was coming.
So glad you made it through.
Good luck in the contest.

Hello Brenda, Thanks for reading, I'm one tough cookie. Made it through by looking at myself as a case history. Thanks for the good wishes. Bless you, Kace.

What a frightening experience, the accident was bad enough but the aftermath beggars belief. I get that they wanted to try to save your leg but the surgeon doesn't sound lie compassion for his patient was something he learnt. Thanks for sharing this very personal story Aussie.
cheers,
valda

Hello Valda, Thanks so much for reading. Yes, he told his students never touch a skin-graft under three days. You can't imagine the pain. Blessings, K.

My goodness, this was very compelling reading. What a ride!! You really took me along for that nightmare experience. Wow!! I noticed a couple of things, but to read about a real life horror is a different slant on the usual horror writing genre, and different from the entries I've seen for this competition, so I gave you a six for both those things.

I had to read to the end, from woe to go, or in this case, from woe to woe to woe. All that and you lost your leg after all. What a run around the reaky for no reason. And I had no idea skin grafts were that painful.

You don't use a lot of superfluous wording, and your vary your sentence lengths, that saves monotony setting in for the reader. Two strong skills that will certainly help you in any of your writing endeavours.

I will draw your attention to this sentence:

Resuscitated to face (to- maybe use 'the') horrors to come. It's a wee typo, the story is tragically gripping.

This a great example to anyone of how to start a story -- Wham!!! Right in the action.

'Blood filled my mouth, I was blind to all around me. I landed in the gravel after being catapulted from my still-running motorbike.

Love it! Just one suggestion for improvement, how about just using 'catapulting' as opposed to being catapulted, just a thought, but it does keep you in the action, rather than an observer of the action, if that makes sense.

Nice writing, and its no wonder you hate hospitals. And the fact that this was a horror and non-fiction, was quite impressive. Unique to other entries so I'm voting with a six, cheers, Eve. :)

Hello Eve, Many thanks for you in-depth review. I have taken you suggestions on board, thank you. It still haunts me thirty-seven years later, but, I own my disability, it doesn't own me. Love, Kace XX

How I wish I could give this a sixth star because it absolutely deserves one. I cannot imagine the true level of pain you were suffering then and, I'm sure, all still suffering all these years afterwards...emotional as well as physical. I knew you are in a wheelchair but I didn't know why. I am so sorry this happened to you. It is obvious, however, that you're a trooper and are so talented a writer that readers are deeply touched by this experience that you are sharing. You are truly in my prayers, Kace. Big big hugs!

Big Hugs back at you! Thanks so much for reading. I'm not in pain so much now, have an electric wheelchair and swimming helps in the heated pool. Love, Kace.

Hello Kace, this is well written non-fiction and obviously a story about you, personally. Such a graphic description of your traumatic experience. Very well written. Once little typo ' Resuscitated to face to horrors to come.' - 'Resuscitated to face THE horrors to come". Very well written and I wish you Good Luck in the contest for a real life horror story. Warm regards Dorothy xx
