This is deserving of awards and stars! SUCH a great story!

You did an amazing job of setting the scene. I felt like I was experiencing it with you.

What great writing! Somehow, you captured the essence of Christmas and put it in this story! ~WOW~

I loved that you all slept around the tree, enjoying the smell. I LOVE to do that as well.

Your description of your mom's heart...I could relate. That is exactly how I am.

Great story and memory. Thank you for sharing it!

Awe, Sally, this is such and endearing story. Yes, I'm sure you're right that some of your neighbours had learned about your plight and came to the rescue. That's what it should all be about. I loved the story, and good luck. Ulla xxx

It is wonderful to read of the true love meaning of Christmas now and then. Your family story instilled a feeling of childish sadness mixed with innocent hope. Santa truly did know where you lived.
I'm happy to see the good response and great ALL TIME BEST award, Sally. It is well deserved.

This is really good Sally. It sounds similar to some Christmases I had growing up. We were just glad to get stockings filled with fruit, nuts, and that delicious hard candy that can't be duplicated. I think that we might have got a small toy in the stocking too. I enjoyed reading this well written work. Well done!

What a nice story, Sally. I think in prior generations we weren't so consumed with stuff, but all kids looked forward to one special gift. I know that I did. Parents did their best to provide one big one with multiple small, cheaper gifts. We were all tickled pink with our presents. Your piece is well written and brings back memories for me. Marilyn

This a very good Christmas memory, Sally. :) The joys of Christmas have always been one of the happiest times to share the love that our hearts hold. Yet not every one has a happy Christmas with presents to spare. But to have a family that cares and to share love with one another is beautiful. This is a good entry for the Share your Story contest.

This is a wonderfully written story, Sally. Heart wrenching to be sure, but well told. I was very happy to see that you woke to presents and a special Christmas blessing!!

I'm sure there will be many on site who will in their own ways be able to relate to your story Sal. The finances of the family would get mentioned on occasion in our home as a precursor to Santa's arrival. Especially if my parents had had a bad year... which in tail would send shock-waves through us kids. Santa never let us down though, like you said Santa is as Santa does. Nice!

Hmm, I'm wondering why joy-joy just happened to have shiny blonde hair. Could it be your faith reminded the giver of who is was that brought hope and faith and yes, joy into this Christmas day. Love the story, the sentiment and how it causes us to reflect on the true meaning of this sacred time of year. Best of luck in the contest. Loren

Yes, you're right. I think Joy-Joy was on layaway and someone graciously paid the final payment. My mom always called me Sally Gal. Every gift was appropriate and all the clothes fit. It looked random at first, but I was six; full of childlike faith and optimism. Years later, I asked her if she knew where the gifts had come from and still maintained her silence. I really don't think she knew who it was. Anyway, so good to see you, Loren. Thank you for the lovely review. Blessings to you and yours, especially at Christmas!!
