I found out the My dad was really Santa when I caught him bringing a pillowcase full of wonder in the night when I was six. From that day to this, I don't rate Santa at all, even told my kids he didn't exist, it was always going to be a lie anyway, I was worried about that, it didn't bother them at all, they had enough imagination of their own to more than compensate, Jesus is enough, He's the real gift giver. But He was the compensation that wonderful day, what lovely brothers you have. Beautifully written, blessings, Roy

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kindest compliments. My brothers were not lovely, they were wild. I called them affectionately, 'The Wolves.' They ate us out of house and home according to my mother. The were creative and industrious though, and loved Christmas as we all did.
Sending you my best today as always,
    Sally ;)

There are SO many touching stories on the news during this season--some of them much like the one you've told so well in this piece, making people tear up and smile at the same time, helping us realize there IS good in the world.

A wonderful story sweetheart. My Mum seemed to be able to make Christmas a happy occasion, even after our Dad left us when I was 8. Loved the picture as well. NO SPAGS!

-Very nice image
and story, Sally.
-You tell it very well
and it flows from the
beginning to the end.
-I am with you on being
an optimist-what would
the world be without them?!
-Your mother sounds like a
wonderful person who cared
deeply about her children.
-The description of getting
and decorating the tree is vivid,
and I bet you remember it as
one of the best ever!
-How wonderful that someone
stepped up to make sure
you had a wonderful Christmas.
-I like the ending, too!
-Good luck in the contest.

Dear Pam, thank you so much. I'm so pleased you enjoyed my Christmas memory from 1961. My mother's giving spirit is now mine, and I love to give gifts at Christmas. I've been slowed by illness but pressing through. {Smiles.} Thank you for the generous stars and outstanding marks. It is a gift you continue to bless me with.
Sending you my best today as always, and richest blessings for Christmas!

You are very welcome and deserving, Sally. I am the same way about Christmas; I have more fun with what I give to people and always have some kind of story to go with it! I hope things improve for you soon.

What a beautiful Christmas story. The way you have told it pulls at one's heartstrings in bringing both sadness and then joy. What a beautiful tale for this time of the year.

Nice presentation for this heart warming Christmas story. Been there done that several times in growing up. We always had.a tree from the forest and made gifts for each other cause there was no other Christmas.

What a wonderful story. I'll bet you were all amazed ... not to mentioned grateful. I guess you never learned who did the good deed. Probably several friends all pitched in. I really enjoyed reading this. It's about love, just like Christmas. :)

Hello Sal. What a wonderful story. I was touched by the starkness of the situation, the love of the parents and the event of Christmas morning. It also struck the chord of nostalgia with me because I grew up in the heart of Appalachia with my grandparents and have similar memories. Good luck in the contest. Robert

Dear Robert, thank you for the excellent review and kind comments. Yes, we have much in common. I'm glad you enjoyed my Christmas memory from 1961. We lived in historic Canton, Georgia. Dupree Street is still there, my family ancestral name, and inspiration for 'What The Blind Girl Saw' characters. Now, you know too much . . . .
Sending you my best today as always,
    Sally :)

Hi Sally. It's been awhile, but I have been to Canton Georgia a few times. It was always on business. It is always wonderful to hear from you. Z

There is nothing more painful than when you can't give you children the things they want/need. Especially at Christmas and birthdays. Bless whoever brought those gifts. Someone new how hard your mother worked and decided to help. There are good people 'out there.'
