Congratulations on having your true story so well received. My first observation was that we are nearly the same age--I was born in 1943. I admired your "neon sign" analogy and felt very sorry for your joy being taken away by a self-absorbed grandmother. Sighs- Joan

Thank you, Joan. I had begun writing a series of grandmas evil doings but it dredged up way too many feelings of fear and I had a panic attack every morning for 7 days. SO, I will write no more about her. Linda

Joan: actually, writing about these bad memories (I wrote two more stories about grandmas behavior), brought about waking up to unimaginable anxiety and fear. Have had a terrible week but seems to be slowing down and I quit writing about her. I now understand what PTSD feels like. Linda

I understand that she might have been doing it out of concern for you, and perhaps, because it was your mom's first paycheck and she worried about her money. But from a small child's point of view, all that happened was a fun-sucker showed up on the scene.
Grandmas are generally the ones we run TO for help and support, not away FROM. I'm sorry about this experience, though you tell of it well. Your words (unfortunately) were crisp and clear and your writing was sharp and to the point.
Good luck in the contest - you deserve SOMETHING out of those skates. *smile*

I came in second in the contest. Grandmas was just mean and couldn't stand to see anyone happy which shows you just how miserable she was. Linda

What a meanie. Maybe it was a generational thing. My dad who is your age, born in 48, always complains about how mean his grandmother was. Her daughter, my grandmother, used to spoil me rotten. The older grandmothers probably learned frugality during the Great Depression, since it was a time of poverty with many mouths to feed.

I can TOTALLY relate to the joy you felt as I got a shiny new pair of those "fit to the bottom of your shoe key skates" when I was six and LOVED them! I would have been crushed and it's amazing how those things stick with you WAY into adulthood! She must have been an unhappy woman herself. I FELT this true story and tapped into my own youth as I absorbed your experience. Very well written. Wish I could undo that memory for you.... Karenina

Oh dear, this story hurts my heart. I hate that people like your grandma exist, have children and grandchildren and make everyone's life miserable in the process. My father terrorized us as kids, and the effects of that last a LONG time. (((Big hugs)))

Good luck in the contest, Grandma sounds like a beast. that type roller skate tore-up more shoes than walking, running or jumping. The grandma was right you could get hurt but you could get hurt at school on the playground.

Your grandmother sounds horrible. Why would she do that, and why would your mother let her? I always wanted roller skates as a kid. I never got them. I did buy them for my granddaughter. Your story makes me glad I did.
