I enjoyed reading your chronological interest in books and how you've evolved from them. I might say I mirror your interest, except my beginnings were before yours. The library was a sanctuary for me and I too brought home many books. My first ones were the twin books from different geographic places. The Eskimo Twins, The Chinese Twins... that covered the customs and mores of the country. I am sitting in a room right now with three walls of solid books, where my computer and desk dwell. In my living room, I have another two full bookcases. Yes, books are my life and as a result, so is writing. (not to mention boxes of books in the closet.)

Hello to a another bookworm, I doubt if your beginning was before mine. I was born in 1937. I really appreciate your review and remarks and for helping me win the contest.

I enjoyed reading your story. You basically described my 13-year-old daughter to a T. She has no desire in boys and loves, I mean, loves reading. She has read so many books and created a little 'book nook' in her room. Thank you for sharing.

Thank ;you so much for the review and for telling me about your daughter. I'm so glad to know there are still children who love to read. Kids these days have so many more thing to grab their attention than when I was young. She will probably always love books.

You have a gift for showing not telling as in the titles of books that appealed to you. Also:I loved to find a tight space and curl up away from everyone, and not move for hours except to turn pages.
Books get you interested in boys? I don't follow that line of reasoning unless she read Harlequin novels.

Thank you for the review and the lovely comments. I think my aunt and her daughter spent all their time in beauty shop and didn't know there was other reading material other that Star and True Story.

I really enjoyed this entry for the Appeal Of Books contest. Probably partly because its much like my own. My dad always read the funny papers with us. Great nostalgic entry good luck in the contest.

I think this is a good entry for the "The Appeal of Books" contest.
This well written piece tells of a love of books starting at a young age.
Well done and I wish you good luck with the contest.

Thank ;you so much for that review. I appreciated it. I wonder if we had had TV or I had had siblings if it would have been the same. Maybe not. I'm kind of lucky that I didn't have those things. Books have brought me a lot of pleasure.

An absolute delight to read about this reading journey and how it all began and developed - books are our windows on the world - allowing us access other worlds

This is an excellent story for the appeal of books contest. It repeatedly slides away from the library theme, to consider writing per se, and the adult reader's dream of using books as a sort of moving wallpaper in his/her house.

What an enjoyable glimpse into your formative years, and how the love of reading has enhanced your life. I, too, found fairy tales too brutal to enjoy, but found plenty of other escapism in copious reading. I remember reading under the covers by flashlight so i could keep at it after lights out requests from parents. You mention excelling at crosswords and trivia - a definite benefit of a wide vocabulary and general knowledge.

Thank you so much for the review and the nice comments. Yes, I flashlight worked better than fireflies under the cover. Unfortunately, we only had one and my Dad kept that one by his bed.

Your library adventure, like many stories here, led to a greater appreciation and homegrown love of reading. Many of the contributors to this challenge have stated similar paths and very comparable book titles. Your Bobsey Twins versus The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. I see you liked westerns and lawyer stories, where as I enjoyed science fiction and action heroes like The Executioner and Doc Savage.
What new readers should be encouraged to do is read what they like, no matter what it is or how long it is. Nice job with your essay.

Thank you for the review and comments. Actually the books I mentioned aren't all that I read. I never met a many books I didn't like. When I was growing up there wasn't nearly as much science fiction as there is no. One reader said they even read encyclopedias. I did that too. I read everything with print on it.

Hello, fellow Book Worm!

Oh, did I want to give this the 5 star it is so close to deserving. Please fix the actual booboos (not the opinions) and let me know so I can come back and change the rating!

Some thoughts:

memories was>> Either memories were OR memory was. And whynot memories are? You still remember, right? Not trying to bee a smartelick, just saying...

fairy tales were brutal like killing giants>>fairy tales were brutal(,) like killing giants>> And I hated Bambi's mom dying, too!

time was the day, my>>No comma needed here.

I read by firelight and flashlight and moonlight. I even captured a jar of fireflies hoping I could see to read by them when Dad made me turn out the lights at night.>> What a wonderful couple of lines! Love the!

Books were more interesting. Books had macho men for icons. Sure beat pimply faced teenagers.>> Another great coupe of lines!

Thank you for a thoroughly delightful read. It brought back memories of the library trips to town every couple of weeks and the book-mobile that came out into the country during the summer months. I was a Walter Farley gal, myself, but love is love. :)

Blessings and stay healthy, my fellow book lover!

Deb

Thanks for the review and the lovely comment. Wow! You sure grade hard. I left out a "the" and misplaced two commas which I have fixed. I've had over twenty errors on pieces and still got six stars. It would very nice if you would change the rating so I won't lose the six stars I got on this.
    Please :)
