Fantastic author notes. Very educational and informative. In actuality, the poem itself is the same, but tells the story of a heritage lovingly handed down through this flower and aren't they lovely? This poem is unique, creatively done, carries a lovely rhyming cadence and the overall effect with the photo chosen is perfection.

Flowers are a good reminder of our dear ones. Your mom did a good job with the flowers and probably everytime you look at the garden you are seeing her smiling.

Your observation re: "no particular meter" is correct: none is required in swap quatrain, but each line in my poem contains 10 syllables.

No, Dolly, I wasn't offended. It does seem odd that a swap quatrain doesn't require a specific meter = good thing for me... :)
One reviewer, born in England, commented that "sure" and "her" are near rhymes and not pure rhymes.
I had a bit of fun with that with my family last evening as in northern Michigan, we pronounce "sure" as "sher" = rhymes with "her." So I phoned our daughter and British son-in-law, and asked them to put their phone on speaker. I then asked them to pronounce both words as I spelled them. Immediately, my daughter said, "sher," while our Oxford graduate son-in-law said, "shore."
So it goes...

I really enjoyed this lovely, poignant poem for many reasons. Partly because hollyhocks were a part of my childhood (making Hollyhock dolls) but also because they spark wishes for the grandmother I never knew. Thanks for sharing :)

This is a beautiful poem, and a beautiful tribute to the memory of your hard-working mother. I also love hollyhocks - my neighbour has many in her front garden, and always shares what she can. In fact, we both share what we can. There's nothing prettier and more joyful than a garden full of flowers, especially hollyhocks poking out from in between everything else. Currently, I'm trying to cultivate a pot of them, in hopes that I'll be able to plant them in the garden soon. Thank you for putting a smile on my face today, and for the beautiful flowers xoxoxoxo

Well, you are the second friend today to have brought me to tears by your appreciation of my swap quatrain! Goodness! I am beyond honored and humbled at the same time.
Both sets of my grandparents were farmers. And from both grandmothers, I still have perennials that bloom every year in our gardens. In fact, I've set certain sections of our yard just for that purpose. Along the northwest side of our home, my maternal grandmother's lily-of-the-valley has taken over, and throughout our yard, her campanula has taken on a life of its own! I never know where it is going to appear, and I wouldn't change that for anything.
The hollyhocks now grow alongside an arbor in our back yard, and along a fence further away from the lily-of-the-valley on the north-west side of our home, I originally planted them alongside a small walkway as one enters our home, but my husband was none too fond of that arrangement especially when they began to get a bit straggly in the autumn...
Our daughter is to give birth to our first grandchild in September, and I can hardly wait to share my hollyhock seeds with her and her little family...
