I am so glad you wrote the author's notes because I was able to catch what you were referring to in this 5-7-5 poem, so short and so quiet. I like how you tell the story, without telling much, oh well, that's the point.

Different people have different knowledge based on their different experiences, and as this poem was based on fishing in New Zealand I thought it might need some explanation. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Sometimes when I write it is hard to know what words or phrases or idioms or slang are specific to my own country - I don't always know whether someone from another country will understand life in Australia and New Zealand if they haven't been here... also our language is British English and that can at times be different to American English.

A well written 5-7-5 for the contest. May you have a blessed weekend. My grandson who is an avid fisherman would love this short poem.

Waterhouse is one of my favorite painters. There are so many good ones. I like your poem which suggests the "one that got away." Interesting connection using these word choices. Good luck in the contest. Marilyn

A love poem if I ever read one, LisaMay. :) Yep, I remember the one "that got away" she was a beauty. First I danged my bait close to her face, she took it, and I had her on the line. I pulled and groan, but she fought to stay hooked, never letting go. Finally, as I got her close to me, she got loose and swam away. That beauty will always have a place in my heart. :)

It's a pity you didn't get to eat more of her! I guess you had to scale back your intentions. What a flake!

This is a wonderful metaphor - old fisherman tell many yarns and they are NOT all about fish! It's tender though too... it is hard for many men to share heart to heart stories of love and loss.

Thanks for your review. I think men can talk a bit more openly with each other when they are doing an activity together... although fishermen by necessity have to be somewhat solitary.

The average fly fisherman never got that lucky. Was Hylas thus named after his manner of salutation towards his bait? Most of us have to tie our flies, but this guy gets them swarming in a different kind of way.

I love your poem here and the notes. There really isn't any fly fishing in our area. The fishermen have to go out onto the lakes in boats to catch. Our rivers are not large enough and drop off too quickly.

Thanks for reviewing. i can picture your area from how you've described it. Here in NZ, we have some of the best fly-fishing in the world.

Beautiful 5-7-5. I love the renaissance of the photo. Thank you for explaining what nymphs are in the author's notes. Some alliteration I found as well, well done!

This sounds like every man's dream come true to have these naked maidens waiting to be rescued among the lilies! But we are referring to the art of fishing here Lisa, I liked the metaphor, love Dolly x

They were luring him in to his death, unfortunately. He should have stuck to fishing.
