I really liked this sonnet. I can see why it would place in a contest. Very nicely done with this work, and it is also very true, especially nowadays.

Melissa,
This sonnet can be true about the pandemic and about life in general. We overlook the normal mundane things until we can't enjoy them anymore.
Then they become our dearest wish.
Congrats on placing second in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Joan

Thank you for your thoughts on the sonnet, Joan. I really appreciate it. It was a blended perspective that led me to write it.. both COVID and the fact that sometimes what we see as a truth is not... it shifts all of our assumptions. Thank you, dear friend, for reviewing it.

This is a very good poem. It reminds us that we don't like normalcy until we don't have it any more and then we realize how much we've missed it or want it back. Marilyn

The final couplet encapsulates the situation very well - with the situation well developed in the previous quatrains -we seem quite lost in our present quandary -thanks for sharing in that lovely sonnet form

This poem need several reads to pick up all its saying ...I hope to see it in the ....poem of the month .... contest.

this virus caught us
unprepared ..our leaders were thumping their chests and saying they had everything under control and we the people believed they would pull us through instead their arrogance was short lived ..

this tiny , invisible enemy has put our entire society on its knees...

Humanity is standing on shifting sand and our society , our lives will never be the same ...we might as well get use to the bleak reality.

Our future is full of uncertainty.

We were living in a dream and we woke up in a nightmare ...

..we thought we were in control..masters of this world... but it was just an illusion , this enemy smaller than a grain of sand has disrupted our way of life..and has shown us just how fragile/ vulnerable we really are.

...old bedrock quakes when truths aren't as they seem.....

With a vaccine we can hope to keep at bay this deadly enemy but I have come to terms with the fact that the lightheartedness of our yesterdays will never return.

"Build your house on a strong foundation and happiness will follow you. There are two ways of building, the man who built on shifting sand and the other on solid foundation. I liked your poem so much, it summed up today! K xx

Thank you dear Kace for your lovely comments. I agree with your insight and remember the Bible story of building on the rock or sand. Much appreciated.

This is a very intricate poem, that requires careful reading to yield its secrets.
The verse I prefer is
"For, when we're forced to look beneath veneers,
discovering a deeper, hidden theme,
our world no longer safely perseveres,
old bedrock quakes when truths aren't as they seem."
I find that this particularly reflects the title.

This certainly sums up the troubles we are facing daily now with the pandemic threatening our existence.
I love the couplet. " New normal[s] seem so hard to understand, when built upon hotbeds of shifting sand."
Our situation does seem to change daily. Well done, Melissa. Nancy:)

Spell check say's drop the s. LOL

A very well-written sonnet about the shifting sands beneath our feet of life that are constantly moving and we have to find a steadfast rock to stand on if we do not want to fall.
