I enjoyed reading this. I think it's important to remember that every person is a person, not just a black person or a whites person etc. And to understand people you need to look at their personalities and their families, not the color of their skin.

Make no mistake, some have political agendas. Some have personal biases. - this line sums up what I take away from your story. The bullying incident could have been used by someone less open minded To show black people are bad but instead you showed black people are just people. They get scared, angry, and laugh just like the rest of us, it's just the police and a few idiots who see them as different.

This is a great piece of writing although I might take out the bit about the child asking for a peanut and strawberry jam sandwich as it sounded a little trite to me. Otherwise it's such a nice piece.

Thanks for sharing

This is a nifty little story to have in your hip pocket when these types of issues percolate to the surface as they do when the powers push down to hard on the people.

Wow! Virtual six! Wish this had been for the Dialogue Only contest or a script. Somehow it feels biographical so it could have been in the Share Your Story contest. Super story about how to deal with racism - getting over the ignorant bias and learning to treat one another as humans. Well told!

    Hello Helen!
I had it in preview mode for the Dialogue Only contest, but I asked Tom to make it just a regular offering as I felt it contained too much narration and the dialogue was mostly mine. Thought about the Share Your Story contest, but, again, wasn't certain how the format would have been received.

    So pleased you enjoyed!
    Thank you!

This is a great commentary on some of the problems "back in the day" and today. I loved the way you handled your own situation and how you explained it to your child. It is very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You probably haven't read my poem, but I pointed out in the notes, that most of us are a seething mass of prejudice, one only has to have any opinion to realise that. I realised that mention of any issue with people was bias when raising the girls. And South Africa and Zimbabwean whites may well want to differ with "black lives matter" to "white lives matter". It's hard not to be biased, it needs good old self evaluation...you know...humility. Great article, it's good you made up. Well done, Diane. Blessings, Roy

Hello Diane,
I pray you are well during this global pandemic. I really appreciate a chance to read this honest story shared with your son. I'm sorry for your confrontation with Charlene & Bonita while in college. Sometimes, people don't always know how to just have a simple conversation to share their feelings. I have experience racism all my life. I can tell you, a lot worst hurtful things have happened to me than you shared (name calling, discrimination, no service, etc.) In my world, living my life has never been free from racism. I am grateful that I have been able to move forward to a better place and have tried to treat all people with kindness, respect and forgiveness. Thank you for your story. Sometimes, truth is hard to hear, but truth telling is needed. There's not enough room on this platform to share all my stories or lament. Again, thank you for sharing your story. Take care, Diane. God bless you. Happy writing:-)

    Hello Joyce!
Thank you for your excellent rating and thoughtful review.
No, I cannot begin to fathom the suffering you have endured. My experience pales in comparison, of that I am certain...

This is a well-written commentary on the various kinds of racism and minority problems in the workplace. There are so many different instances of prejudice that we experience in our lifetimes, that are never discussed and in a lot of cases such as yours resolved sanely. I wish we could handle these inequalities without having the horrendous deaths that have occurred. Dialogue and proper action would go a long way. Looting will not solve anything. Well done Diane. Ralf

Dear Buddy, Thank you for laying out your read on the current situation in such an artfull and non threatening way. And like Morgan, fix a peanut and jelly sandwich and then go out to research the situation!

I think we all need to go out and separate the wheat from the chaff for our selves.

This sounds like a true story, but I am really not sure. My main sentiment is that it is too bad our president has stirred up such controversy, because it is leading to extreme reactions on both sides. I am a moderate myself, and frankly, I fear for the future of this country, no matter which side gets in. Thanks for sharing.
