many congrats on all your winnings and accolades! well deserved.
Pantygynt may have inspired the 2nd line, but the 3rd is the clever one and the clincher. Sneaking in a little Shakespeare (and Merchant of Venice) always adds a touch of class. :) Enjoyable poem!

Congratulations on winning the contest, Tony! Hot summers mean shark time. I like the way you combined "shiver" and "sharks". We do the shivering.
I'm not familiar with "shylocks" though. you fill me in?
I just wrote a poem about being shark bait.

Cheers
Kimbob

Thanks for your review, Kimbob. Shylocks, as I am given to understand, is naval argot for dangerous, shallow waters.

Well, I think this is fantastic! No wonder it won the contest. The alliteration is wonderfully satisfying. I'm always full of admiration for a poet who can pack so much into three little lines. Good work and congratulations for winning the contest. This is a whole story in a half-pound.

Sh-h-h! Don't tell anyone, but I think this is great. So full of humor as well as alliteration. By the way, does 'flesh' count? Really.? I'd say you went the way of all flesh with that one. Congratulations on your win.

I can see why this one won. Given the additional meaning of 'Shylock" supplied by Pantygynt, your aquatic-usury analogy has many points of connection -sharks-pound of flesh - shylock -scavenge -shiver. The fact that it also evokes "The Merchant of Venice" only adds to its appeal. The alliteration with the "sh" sounds is great.

Fantastic!

Tony: I see how you won first in the contest . . .this is brilliance with humor and realism and a direct attack rather than pussy footing around (like politicians seem to do). Congrats! You keep safe. Linda

Thank you very much for this. The loan sharks will be delighted, and I shall avoid losing a pound of flesh!

Oh, what a great entry in the 5-7-5 contest! Your humor and wit shine their best and I had a big smile on my face reading it. Thank you for educating us with "shylocks", the word unfamiliar to me until today. Adorable picture and artistic presentation. This should be a winner, you've got my vote.

Thank you for your review, Muse. I'd not heard of 'shylocks' in that context before either. It was Pantgynt who introduced it to me, in an earlier review. Unfortunately, the Contest Committee did't share your high opinion of the poem. LOL

A pound of flesh. Isn't that the way it feels when you have to repay a loan, especially from one of these "sharks"?

"A shiver of sharks" - very clear depiction.

Had to google "shylocks" as wasn't sure what that word meant. Google said it comes from a money lender in Merchant of Venice who charges extremely high interest rates. Perhaps, there is a British definition as well that pantygynt presented? Afterwards, in both cases, that line then made sense.

Would suggest this will be a strong entry for the contest.

Thanks for dropping by to review this, Brett. I hadn't heard the term 'shylocks' describing dangerous shallows but have taken it on trust from the mariner among us. I wasn't able to confirm its authenticity on Google, either.

interesting. I learn something new every day on this site. Never knew what a shylock is until now. Hope you do well in the contest. I see nothing wrong.
