Very dramatic with great descriptions that paint wonderful images. The dialogue feels authentic, which gives the reader a sense of being part of the action. A great entry for the contest, and good luck.

WOW, your story is packed with action and vivid memories of a war that reclaimed and took lots of lives across the globe. Sometimes we go on repeat about what we know, just like your pilot, that his unique purpose is to fight and save his friends. ""I'll fly again. I will! For England. For the the guys in my squadron
who lost their lives . . . for the nurse who died saving me."
!
Tears streamed down his cheeks.

"I--I never learned her name."

Thank you for sharing, I think this is amazing entry for the contest. Good luck with the contest.

What a sad story of loss, Mystery Author. You did a great job with your contest entry. I was engaged from start tot finish reading it. Your progression was well-paced. Your use of descriptive words/phrases worked well, too. I could see everything you mentioned. Your story, though, fictional, pays tribute to the courageous pilots of the RAF in WW2. Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

This work has reached the exceptional level

Wow, didn't expect that! Reminds me of Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms." I am retired navy and though I never saw combat I know many who have. For a few moments I was right there with the protagonist and with the nurse. I thought this would turn into a romance, however the ending was much better.

Well done. You did a good job of describing the horrors of war and what so many of the pilots from Britain and America suffered. Thanks for reminding us of what that air was was like and the mobile hospitals that struggled to treat the wounded. I like the way you wove what caused him to want to return to the battle, even though he was to injured, he had the desire. Thanks for posting.
