Startling subject matter for a sonnet, but perfectly executed. I especially like'circumlocutions balderdash' (say it three times fast. Even cold sober, it's hard to do). Felicitations with regard to the contest.

This poem, A Hopeless Case, is a nice word search exercise for me as I look for meaning in your poem's suggestive wording.
The reference to death that to which the asphodel may allude; some circumlocutious wording which elevates the state of drunkenness to this level of literary observation; and the referencing of The Elements of Style, all come together to give some sort of legitimate purpose for this capture of one who is hung over on the couch. Fun times. Owe you a six.

Nicely rhymed and a great entry from the contest. Your words tell the story of someone who has lost self respect by getting himself into a drunken stupor. I wonder if your last two lines is telling us this man is supposed to be a respected professor.

Thanks, Beth. I appreciate your review and kind words. The last two lines were an oblique reference to Messrs. White and Strunk, who wrote the seminal volume, "Elements of Style". One of their key recommendations was to avoid unnecessary wordiness! All good wishes, Tony. Keep well!

I found this poem to be a detailed descriptive read. The author's words
are engaging clear and creative. I would say if the author asked me
"plain drunk"! The poem flows and connects well. Hope you are doing
well. Have a great weekend!

Just love the potency of this fabulous poem Tony. Besides its effortless rhyme and flow, you have that British sardonic reserve, built into a framework of rustic language. Beautifully written as befits your articulate nature. Language rich and a gossipy engagement, well done, good luck, blessings Roy

I'd say, just plain old drunk! Lol. You have written a poem here, that I would love to hear someone who'd had a few to drink, try to read it aloud! I think you should give it to the police as a test instead of asking drunks to breath in one of their recorders. I enjoyed reading this one, my friend, I read it out, and I passed the test ... I'm sober! :)) Sandra xxx

Thanks, Sandra. I appreciate your lovely response. After a few drinks. I'd certainly fail the test. Although not entirely sober when I wrote this, I wasn't so thunk as you drink I was. All good wishes, Tony. Keep well!
