Your story captures the thrill of a close race very well. I used to compete in track events so i know exactly how it feels to get beaten by an unfair physical advantage - my rival had a bigger bust than i did when "breasting the tape" at the finish line. (I think running shoes are more likely to have spikes rather than cleats... that sounds like football boots.)

Hi, Lisa. I am not surprised you could relate to my story having run track. But I was surprised by HOW your rival beat you. You should write a story about that. And you are right. The correct word is ?spikes,? not ?cleats,? and I should have known this. I was always present when the shoe guy showed up in his truck to sell regular running shoes and spikes to my cross-country runners. Rod

Yes, I probably could write an entertaining tale about a running race from a female perspective. I did 100 and 200 yard sprints, so the story would be brief!

Hello, my friend,

Excellent entry for the 75 Word Flash Contest. It's hard to tell a complete story in flash fiction but you managed well. The excitement of a race won by a nose!

Nice description of a moment in the life of a runner in a race. I didn't unerstand the nickname or what it meant, but that could have been hard to fit in when the words are limited.

Hi, Mia. Thank you for sharing my story. ?Schnoz? is slang for a big nose like Wiley Coyote?s.

I liked the names 'Schnoz' and "Legs'. It seems that many times athletes get nicknames- some of which they likely DON'T enjoy?

Best of luck in the 75 Word Flash writing prompt contest.

A very well-written seventy five word flash fiction. When we have supporters screaming for us to perform better we do try harder until the finish line where we may win with a nose.

You did a great job on this amusing story and entry! Having two daughters who did track, I really get the funny of this! Their teammates had all sorts of nicknames. Hearing others yell their nickname really did help them kick into high gear.
Good luck in the contest!
Tina

I am so pleased you could easily relate to my story, Tina. I used to coach cross-country and the nicknames both the girls and boys received were often hilarious and did motivate.

Aha...I knew it! A track coach. Track is a sport where the athletes become like family:)
