Dear Beth, I am so happy when you post a chapter, with no real tragedies, and a few 'almost' miracles !
I just realized the I forgot to read about the luff and mirliton that you could grow on your fence. As I have never heard of them!
I will have to go on the internet as soon as I have finished this batch of on-line posts that I have in my in-box. I will look forward to finding out if Carol gets a 'nose job' !

Thank you so much for the review and comment. I'd never heard of those vegetables either until I got to New Orleans. I'm sure you have heard of Luffa sponges that you use on your skin. That is the same a Chinese Okra. You slice it and eat it before you let dry and make something you use to use on your skin. Pretty carzy, huh? You can look it up on he internet.

Always a pleasure! I can relate to their lack of enthusiasm for piano lessons--my parents let me quit after two years. Things seemed to have settled down overall, apart from the emergency surgery. Nose jobs were the thing in my high school--not me! Ruined so many. I look forward to learning whether Carol chose to lose the nose. Re that cult--just yesterday we watched a documentary! Cheers. Thanks so much for the review and comments. I always enjoy whatever your write. The cult is now known as The Family International and the leader is a rapist. It's scary. I've seen the documentaries too.

I'm glad Carol didn't take their teasing to heart. Kids can be so cruel sometimes. I'm glad everything is going well for you. The baby in the picture is adorable. Is that one of yours? Your chapter is well-written, interesting start to finish. I look forward to reading more.

Thank you for the review and nice comments. Carol has never been bothered by teasing. When she was that age all the kids liked her and she seemed happy. The baby pic is from the net. My picture from that time are on another computer and I can't get too them right now.

Wow! What an eventful year. I am glad that the doctor said to hold off the rhinoplasty until Carol's face fully grew to her adult size. I really don't like it when people do plastic surgery on children - it's a big thing in Korea where they want the kids to have perfect faces like the movie stars.

Poor Carol already went through so much with menses and appendicitis!

I wondered about that cult. The name is familiar but I don't know the specifics. At Berkeley, in the late 1970's there was the People's Temple folks (Jim Jones) and the Moonies as well as the Hare Krishnas all over campus.

Great job giving us a view of that time period overall.

One minor suggestion:
and would have need more complicated (needed)

Thank you so much for the six star review and the interesting comments. The Children of God is now called the Family International, It started in 1960 and is still around. There has been a lot of bad publicity about in on TV. The original leaded died and new one has been convicted for raping children. There are many horrible thing that go on in this crazy world.

I think we are on the same page when raising our kids. Never experienced the Appendix thing but the other kept my Mary very busy.
I think Waco had an occult about that time also but not sure.
good one Beth

Thank you so much for the review and comments and the six stars. Cult and occult is different. Occult has to do with spiritualism and contacting the dead. Cult is following a charismatic live leader. The one in Waco was a cult. They were following David Koresh and they got burned out. That was in 1993, This was in 1973, There was one in Jonestown before that. They all end badly.

Yep, you are right. I forgot about that. Anyway they both are something I care not to be near.
My Cindy was the same way about her Piano teacher.

A family of six! Of course, there is always something happening. Braces for the teeth...I had those from twelve years old till almost fourteen! But until today, toi, toi, toi, I have my own, white, sane teeths perfectly in line. It was worth it. Appendicitis: good you were just in time, a ruptured appendix is super dangerous.
This cult you were describing, did they have a chapel or a chapter in your neighborhood? They sound like quite creepy to me.
Connie growing nicely and being taken good care of, that helped you a lot I think, also because the other children could help a bit.
Nice chapter, Beth.

Thank you for the review and comments. The cult did have some kind of commune somewhere in the area. I didn't ask too many questions. I know they there was a lot of children and the brochures had cartoons of father Abraham saying that women should stay barefoot and pregnant. i was sick. I tried to stay away from them.

Life with a young growing family is such a joy and a delight with such a range of activity going on all the time (though we don't always think so at the time!!)
