Ronnie, this is a very nice 7 7. 7 poem.
Settlers robbed and pillaged Indian lands for personal gain and profit. I like the brevity and direct way your poem gets its idea across.

Ciao Rhonnie , a thought provoking theme..

White man over the centuries has stood out for his savagery.. The Spaniards wiped out the Aztec empire with war and disease .

Idem the whites in Australia against the aborigines and the europeans in America ..

They believed to have more right to the land because they would put it to "better " use ..
Cultivating it , building their cities on it etc .

Though progress has brought over the centuries benefits it has also created negative stuff

100 years ago industrial progress was seen as a grand achievement of mankind but now we see its negative side effects ..

It has polluted our air , formed an ozone hole in our atmosphere allowing novice ultraviolet rays to reach us.. This has contributed to climate change ...

Those in power ( USA , european countries etc) know what is needed to stop the damage but they are not interested in change cause it costs too much ..

The natives Indians respected the land and used it wisely .. The whites in one year ( 1870/71) killed 2 million bisons ( mainly for the hide)

And from 1872/74 five thousand a day were killed taking it to 5.4 million bison killed in three years.

In 1884 there were only 325 Wild bison left ( including 25 in Yellowstone)

the Indians in harmony lived with and off this beast , using everything from the hide , to the bones, the meat but it was the whites that exterminated both.
____

This is the poem I wrote about the genocide of the American Indian.

The life of an Indian
was in harmony with the land.
The great bison was revered
and roamed the north grasslands.

Symbol of sacred life and abundance,
unity and endurance.

The annual buffalo hunt
was celebrated in song and dance.
Hunters were armed with wit 'n courage,
bow 'n arrow and lance.

Dried, the game provided food
during the long winter stand.
Bones became knives,
horn and hooves became utensils.
It's hide used to make tipis, clothing
and other essential.

Nothing was wasted of the sacred buffalo.
It provided wellbeing to the Indian popolo.

But then came the White Man
and the slaughter began.
The ground was bloodstained
the stench of carnage insane.

Only fifty years later
where animal life once had been teeming
laid now a graveyard of bones gleaming.

The bison came very close to extinction
while the native populations died of starvation.

A cautionary poem on the unexpected results of an ill-advised larceny of the most precious of material possessions--the land that is a birth right.
Thank you for writing and sharing, "The Natives."
