Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A Quatern

The Waterfall

The lovely roar of waterfalls,
the misty spray that fills the air,
the moss that grows along the side,
I think there’s surely magic there.
 
Where nothing can be heard except
the lovely roar of waterfalls,
behind the cascade I once stepped
into what seemed cathedral walls.
 
I felt the spirits of the past
who might have heard so long ago
the lovely roar of waterfalls
as to the sea the rivers flow.
 
While standing there, a presence felt
beside me in this hallowed hall.
It seemed it might be list’ning to
the lovely roar of waterfalls.

A Quatern is a sixteen line French form composed of four quatrains. It is similar to the Kyrielle and the Retourne. It has a refrain that is in a different place in each quatrain. The first line of stanza one is the second line of stanza two, third line of stanza three, and fourth line of stanza four. A quatern has eight syllables per line. It does not have to be iambic or follow a set rhyme scheme.
