Zebra Love

by Sandra Nelms-Ludwig

The author has placed a warning on this post for language.

It snowed many days and nights,
during the season of their togetherness.
The cold and shadows blanketed the whiteness
but never penetrated the fiery hot heat of their zebra love.
Until,
Until,
love vows grounded in hope
drowned in alcohol drenched worse and changing ways.
She wanted a solution,
an AA solution.
He felt it was not required.
despite peeing in bed,
sometimes mistaking the hallway for the bathroom
and falling and breaking an arm that had often held her close.
Yes, it snowed many days and nights
during the season of their togetherness.
Cold and shadows blanketed the whiteness
now smothered and snuffed out zebra love fires.
Each unchanged,
No attempt to change movement
Alcohol-soaked self-accusation
loosened cemented promises of a future to be.

Desperately, he tried
keeping a love that had secondary status to a yearned bottle.
Beseeching biddings failed,
So, he hurtfully pinpointed ancestral roles
which never mattered before in their love.
She was not just a bitch.
She was a Black Bitch,
a BLACK ungrateful BITCH.
Until,
Until,
powerless he lambasted a decisive bruising blow.
Leave you ignorant NIGGER.
She ran toward freedom.
On his deathbed,
he asked the nurse to tell his Zebra Love
he NEVER, EVER stopped loving her.
