Sandra Nelms-Ludwig: I am a mother, veteran, former interpretative national park ranger, retired educator, poet, and activist, and I began writing poetry at age 12. I have performed in numerous poetry slams and open mics, both in Germany and America. My poetry has appeared in two chapbooks, Litspeak at Hollins University in 1994 and Mouth Music at Big Island, Virginia in 1997. The collection of poems in my debut book, Literal LIFE Lessons, published in August 2021 is a sampling of my writing over the past 50 years.
Writing Literal LIFE Lessons was cathartic. Poetry writing has always been my source of emotional release. I do not write "well-behaved woman" poetry. My poetry expresses the raw underbelly of humanity.

    Annmuma: Sandra, I am so sorry and my heart hurts for you. I wish you many joyful memories and thoughts to bring out today to help comfort the wound that will never heal..

    I don't know what to say to offer comfort, so let me share something that was said to me on October 27, 1956. I was not yet 13 years old and my mom had died the day before. I was angry. Our vet and his wife were in the living room visiting with my father; his wife called me over. I arrived with a chip on my shoulder, having heard all of the platitudes and fake 'we care' that I cared to heard. Mrs. Paige said, "Olevia, you are one of the most blessed kids I know." I just stared at her as if she had just grown an extra head. "Yeah." After a moment of silence, she said, "If you could have chosen another mother who would have lived to be 100, would you have given up your years with you mom?"

    OF course, I burst into tears at the truth of what I heard. I would have chosen my mom in a second! I don't know why Mrs. Paige would have said such a thing to me. She didn't even really know me. But I do know, I thought it about it a lot during those teenage years! -
    Tom Horonzy: I know the ins and outs of where you lived. We were a piece down the road in Rocky Mount where a community of Dunkers lived. Your life has been full. -
    Moonbeams Musings 55: Thank you for sharing. I am so new at writing. I do not know a thing about poetry I just write what comes in my head. My "dark poems" are about losing my son. Then I have humorous and ones about God. Seems we are somewhat neighbors. I live outside of Bedford in Thaxton and attend the writer's group at Big Island Library. -
