a bond between two friends

Common Thread

by Jesse James Doty

Reunited after nearly 20 days apart, my best buddy David and I met in my home for a long-awaited visit.

At first, we felt awkward and didn't know what to say to each other. But it wasn't too long before we were laughing and enjoying each other's company.

You see, we come from different backgrounds and yet we share a common thread of ideals and ways of communicating that spreads our friendship throughout our many years together into one cohesive bond.

Chasing memories of forgotten favorite places rising up in conversation, we recall the wonderful trips we separately went on. We remember going to lovely waterfalls and beaches where the 60s were the place to be.

The past almost always eludes us since we are now in our late 60s and early 70s. But who's counting? We enjoy our friendship and the many times we spend together doing absolutely nothing but hanging out.

In the end, he gathered his belongings and spontaneously reached out to hug me, asking me to do my best to stand up, and for the first time ever we hugged. It was the best part of the visit.

Now, it won't be long before I stand and walk, going together with my buddy on nature trails and beaches that we love so much.

Reunited with David after he suffered from Covid and was isolated for over two weeks. I missed him terribly and couldn't wait to see him again.
