Travels with Charley, Spock and Jimmy B

You- the 2nd Person

by Tom Horonzy

Hip-hip-hooray!  Your mind remains babbling away, but that's okay; Your company is enjoyable, as are your peripatetic hoodoo wanderings. You make me feel a bit Steinbeckish with FanStory being your Rocinante, Steinbeck's specially made camper, named after Don Quixote's horse. Did you know that?

You might have an edge, not literarily, but Steinbeck was limited to paper roadmaps while "Traveling with Charley," his poodle, from Long Island to the Salinas Valley, in California. The edge is the internet which allows you to 'Travel with Tom' (me), where previously you flew through space with the likes of Kirk and Spock.

"I do," you respond. "According to Jim's captain's log, his first mission was to the planet Tantalus V, home to a Federational penal company. It began on September 8th, 1966. That's all there is to say on the matter," as Forrest Gump would say." You could have learned that from watching The Outer Limits. "No. Today, I would use Wikipedia on this handheld device."

Let's "Turn the Page..." as Bob Segar wrote in his lyrics of 1971. That song was eventually released as a single by 'Live Bullet' in '76. Many artists re-recorded the song. Your favorite is Dave Henley's version in 2021.

Haven't you said, if Steinbeck had delayed his sojourn twelve years, he and Mr.Seger may have hooked up in Omaha for a sixteen-hour sojourn to... hmm. Where? At fifty-five miles per hour, Charley and his friend could have made Yellowstone, Monument Valley, or Temple Square.  In winter, they could have skiied Park City, Utah, or baked in the Moab desert, depending on the season. But they didn't, so now what?

Your tour guy is tiring, so let's end "Come Monday," having a "Cheesburger in Paradise," at "Five O'clock, Somewhere,"  perhaps at the Holiday Inn in Key West with Jimmy Buffet and Brian Wilson for "God Only Knows" the way to Kokomo.

Between Steinbeck and Hemingway is a toss-up as to who would be my favorite author. I had written this piece originally in a different context but could not find a home to share it on when this challenge came along, so I rewrote what I had to the second person, and believe I did in the manner required.
Jimmy B is Buffet and Brian is Wilson of the Beach Boys. Kokomo isn't a known surf city but actually a bar in Islamorada, Florida Keys.
