Who Surprised Who?
by Begin Again
Panic gripped me.
After three years, I assumed James shared my fantasy. We'd talked of growing old together. Over a candlelight dinner, I surprised him.
"I'm pregnant."
Red wine spewed across the table. I collapsed in inconsolable tears.
The next morning, he sent flowers, apologizing.
Still stinging, I sent him a single black rose. My note suggested he rot in hell. I wasn't a desperate woman.
He sent an engraved invitation. 'Please meet me tonight at 222 Landon Lane."
My heart melted.
Outside the house, my spirits wavered.
Opening the door, I froze. Black linen draped the furniture. A skeleton dangled nearby.
Was this a sick joke?
Hysterical, I raced outside, barreling into James.
"Honey, what are you doing?"
"I got the message!" I whined.
"What? ... Last year's haunted house?" Laughing, James pointed at the house next door.
