An Invitation

by jlsavell

Poem of the Month Contest Winner

If God called me today and invited me to His Heaven
I'd have a few questions before a decision
And I would hope He would not be so offended
if I chose to decline the offer He extended

I would ask first," Do you have chocolate Hershey Kisses;
and a wondrous tabby cat that playfully hisses?
Do you have sweet puppies that make a wee child smile;
or chameleon lizards that wear nature's style?

Do you have awe-inspiring oceans of dark crystal blue,
with garden coral reefs of breathtaking hues?
Can you see the sea mammals gracefully leap
from their underwater kingdom in Earth's fluid deep?

Do you have mountains of striking splendor that reach to the skies,
which harbor the mighty winged Eagle that soars and flys;
majestic waterfalls that begin at Zenith's crest;
as they meander down its shoulders in rushing zest?

Do you have plains of ochre yellow that gambol with the wind;
or valleys so lush with the greens of nature's blend?
Can I wake to the dewy marshland's throaty songs,
while its vast myriad of creatures bustle along?

Do you have the white tail deer that stands quietly by the tree,
beyond the white rapids of a river's rolling spree?
And roses, do you have roses with sweet fragrant air;
or orchids, pansies, daffodils that dress with rich flair?

Can you hear dazzling grandiose glaciers break with a boom;
or the lone feral wolf who bays at the gleaming moon?
Can you see the caramel sunrise in morning's hued grace;
or the lambent glow of moonlight in your heavenly place?

Can you taste seasons with expression that visit once a year,
from golden cider Falls to Summer's zesty cheer?
Do you have music, soft music, that soothes the savage soul;
like Beethoven or Mozart, your genius they extol?

How about children chasing red kites bellowing in the wind;
laughing as kites' colorful tails would climb and descend;
or carnivals with bright lights and spinning carousels;
full masted giant ships that magically set sail?

Oh God, I could inquire so much more you see;
but just a few more that are important to me
Tell me, though the world has gone madly adrift,
why do you graciously bestow man these gifts?

Will a woman experience the sweet miracle of birth;
the warmth of a newborn's breath, as on Earth;
or taste the ecstasy between two lovers entwined?
For all of mankind's pleasures cannot be refined

So really, you have put Earth's paradise into mankind's heart;
though pain, death, and suffering are greatly a part.
So I ask, may your will be done on Earth as in Heaven
Thank you, I'd like to stay here, that's my decision."
