A Prize Shot (Once In A Lifetime)

by Dawn Munro

The rich loam scent fills the air as my paddle dips; the forest is always so fresh-smelling after a rain. Pine fragrance brings Christmas to mind, but it's far too early to think of it now. A loon calls, the echoing across the lake a reminder to me that I must make a stop on my way back to civilization. My friend, Bernice, is lonely.

The first rays of sun are just breaking over the horizon, turning the velvety smooth, black water to glistening gold. I've started out early this morning in hopes of catching the graceful heron seeking its breakfast. My camera rests on the seat beside me, the macro lens wearing a special filter; I've planned a romantic shot.

In front of my canoe a trout leaps, the splash it makes a sweet sound, like music to my city-jangled nerves. A few more strokes and I'll have reached the estuary. Then, as I round the bend, in all its splendor, is my prize Great Egret standing just off the shoreline, but he is not alone. Back-lit by the brilliant sun is his mate, and her glorious wings as she takes flight steal my breath away.

I rest the paddle on the seat and raise my Nikon.
