Just saying... again!

Things America has that no peer nation has:

A gun lobby that?s perverted the Second Amendment
Republican lawmakers who let them do it
Easy access to guns for all civilians
A gun homicide rate that's 26 times higher than any peer nation

RE: Just saying... again!

And the new Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said, "Mass shootings happen because of 'the human heart' - not guns." Well there you have it! It isn't guns that shoot people it's human hearts that shoot people. Who knew?

In that vein, Johnson offered his prayers in the wake of Wednesday's mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, which left 18 people dead. I've never heard about thoughts and prayers before. This man truly does have fresh ideas.

All we can hope for is that Kamala Harris, a woman completely incapable of making a speech, will step down voluntarily. Let's see if she will do so. Biden can win if Harris makes this correct move.

RE: Just saying... again!
The one thing these mass shootings have in common is the killer has a history of mental illness. It's easy to say get rid of the guns, but attacking the problem of mental illness isn't so easy. It is a disgrace the U.S. has such a problem. Even when a person is sending off red flags all over the place, he may get two weeks in a mental health establishment. I believe these people should be institutionalized if they're a threat to society. We are now living in an uncertain society, with many individuals growing up in single-parent households, lacking a belief system. These things only heighten the possibility for anger and mental illness. judi

Do you somehow manage to convince yourself that other countries don't have mental illness?

I'm sorry, but it is painfully obvious that mental illness is NOT the reason for the shocking gun-death carnage in the US.

RE: Just saying... again!
This is a map of "reported" mental illness around the world. It gives us a general idea of how prevalent mental illness is around the world. No other country has mass shootings at the horrific level as that found in the USA. So quite right, it isn't caused by mental illness or "the human heart". It is caused by guns.

If there's a big mental health problem, yes, that absolutely needs addressing. But I would have thought concerns about people with red flags all over the place might make some think it might be a good idea if it weren't quite so easy for people on the verge of a mental breakdown to get hold of a weapon that can cause such devastation so quickly.

Hello, Scarbrems. I think, and I may have said this before, but there is a lot that people outside the US do not understand about how our nation works. I'm not blaming them. I don't know much about the details of how the UK or Canada's systems, or culture works. That's normal. I don't live there nor do I scholarly study them. I think many non-US citizens believe that Democrats and Republicans greatly differ on the 2nd amendment and gun rights. That is not true. You would believe that from CNN or MSNBC or Fox and such media, because they routinely lie about that, but it isn't so. Most non-US people don't understand that individual states have their own Constitutions, with a version of the 2nd amendment, including blue (democrat controlled) states. Recently, the Democrat Governor of New Mexico tried this. It was widely opposed and even struck down by the courts. I think this may help many understand how complex this issue actually is in America. This small clip may help, also, notice how the media guy at first lies about it being only Republicans who opposed this, but later reveals it wasn't.

RE: Just saying... again!
Most "non-US citizens" don't need to be lectured by Americans about how little we understand the country.

Most "non-US citizens" understand that the idea of putting guns in the hands of the general public is symptomatic of the very mental illness which ensures that Americans die in their tens of thousands every year at the hands of gun violence.

That is why most "non-US citizens" back their governments in not putting lethal weapons in the hands of lunatics and zealots.

Gloria is right. Mental illness is a global phenomenon, and many countries with higher incidence of it have gun death rates orders of magnitude lower.

Steve is right. The US gun death rate is 1000% to 5000% higher than nations with similar socio-economic stature, but sane gun laws.

Maybe instead of telling foreigners they don't understand, it's time a few more of your citizens learned from their example, Lancellot.

Or, keep burying your peace-loving citizens and children by the millions. As you love to point out, it's your choice.

Okay, as there is no move, nor has there ever been a move or vote by the majority of Americans in any of the 50 states (Democrat or Republican), nor by any Congress (Democrat or Republican led) to change or repeal the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution, then it seems we choose to keep things as they are. Now that is the undeniable fact. So, what is there to argue?

RE: Just saying... again!
I guess we could argue why not one American leader, federal or state, has ever had the balls to stand up to the gun lobby and put it to a vote.

It seems to me the blindingly obvious point to be made, which is overlooked by almost everyone, is that in the midst of all the wailing and hand-wringing about 2nd amendment rights, no changes to the constitution are in fact necessary to adopt sane gun laws.

In spite of that obvious fact, if you're so dead against amending that sacred document, then I suggest you advocate repealing the amendments that have already been made. In particular, the second one would be a good place to start. It would eliminate so much bickering, not to mention pointless bloodshed.
