I've voted for Dick Durban several times. I'm glad my vote helped you. I don't know if I would have been so diplomatic with the finance clerk. She doesn't sound like she was interested in helping you.

I was in the Navy for twenty four years and I can feel your pain. I was a bit luckier, I homesteaded in San Diego, bought a home for my family but had many deployments without them.

You faced some challenges here Barbara and when we are up against red tape, it can be very frustrating. I loved your sense of humour though and this probably stopped you from completely blowing your top! A fine post Barbara and I loved learning about your interesting story here of your early days bringing up your children, love Dolly x x x

I assume you got things settled and worked out. I sewar a little common sense should have been used here. You were not only a wife but a mother of three. Even if your husband had dealt with you in a less than proper manner, I know from experience that his top sergeant would have made him do the right thing.

I hope conditions have improved for the GI families. The sounds like a nightmare. Military families were not well taken care of. Strange about the power of attorney thing. I thought it was primarily so that one who had it could take care of financial matters. That's how it worked for me when my husband was incapacitated. Another sorry story was about the housing. If they want people to join the Military, they should take care of their families better. This sentence in your sixth paragraph sounds confusing: "We searched for apartments on the economy...." judi

While you were undergoing some very trying times in your life, I was undergoing some of the most wonderful times. I had met my soul mate, was enjoying the best times of my life with her, and on New Year's Eve, would make her my wife.
I will be waiting with interest for the next chapter.

Wow! That sounds terrible. I was a little disappointed I had known my husband until he got out of military. I was a bit envious of some of friend who got to go live in Germany or some other country. Maybe I was lucky,

Good for you, persevering despite that woman's stupidity. Sometimes one does have to go to higher levels (as I have experienced also) to get things done. We were one of the families evacuated just prior to the Gulf War, and my husband was left behind, so your story brings back a lot of memories for me too. Looking after three children in my sister's spare bedroom, then moving to an apartment, then travelling a thousand kilometres back home when the lease on our house had finished, and then getting everything out of storage again. I sympathise with you!

What an horrendous experience all round! I think I might have gone completely out of my mind with frustration and anger. But it's surprising what we women can do when the odds are stacked against us (as they so often are!) I'm impressed, Barbara, with the way you stood up to bureaucracy and got the job done. I bet Brian was too. But why were they saying that he'd taken the money out himself? Did they know at all what they were doing? Thank you for sharing this excellent memory of life as a military wife. Take care Debbie

Hi Barbara,
This is a great chapter. It shows how frustrating the military can be. You nailed it. I would love to read this book when finished. You sure had me walking down memory dealing with all the red tape. I found what I believe to be a few errors. Great job. Keep it coming.

-Maybe {good some} news, Should it be {some good}?

-I received a call every six weeks{,} but often it was longer. comma?

I had a comma there, but my grammar check threw a temper tantrum. I added it. I'll see what the other reviewers say. I have an issue with mixing up words. LOL My brain works faster than my fingers. Thank you for the catch. I appreciate it.
