This is certainly a big issue in the U.S. now. How accurate is our history? There have been so many attempts to rewrite, to defame our founders and cast doubt on what they achieved. Some truth, some lies pretty much sums it up. When I've been researching Abraham Lincoln, I often find varying accounts, such as about his meeting with Sojourner Truth. You have a lot of truth in this, especially "some truth, some lies" to the accounts we read. There is always going to be bias. Something handed down by word of mouth can always be misinterpreted. Your poem is really fuel for thought. When we read some historical account, we have to remember it comes through a lens, as you mention. Great work, and I do wish I had a six for this. judi

Written words of history are what a man writes. iIf it is war-- the victor writes the history. Legends are myths that grow with the passing of mouth to mouth. Yet, we believe in what the Bible says. Why? Because it is truth and what is written about people and their way of life historians have proven to be exact. I believe in Jehovah for who else hold the world up with no strings attached?

You've thoughtfully raised many questions in this wonderful poem, Roy. These are questions I myself ask, and today there are so many versions written of what has happened in a day, who in the future will ever know the truth? Well done. Thanks for sharing.

You raise some sound questions. They are questions I use when defending the Bible's truth. When I am told the Bible is nothing more than words written by man, I respond with "So was Genghis Khan, his story is nothing, but words written by man."

There is no recorded history before:

The first photograph ever taken was accomplished in 1826. (1)
The first voice recording was produced on April 09, 1860. (2)
The first moving picture was developed on June 19, 1878. (3)

So, anything before those dates is by word of mouth only. There was no possibility of any record.

Faith is what makes the Bible real to me and this makes the presence of God a given. The existence of Jesus then is real; the crucifixion, the resurrection and the ascension all become factual events. Adam and Eve, Noah and the ark, Jonah and the whale, all these wonderful stories, and so many more, become real.

A Christian becomes a Christian not because of evidence, but because of conviction. We (Christians) do not really view our belief in God as an evidential outcome. We see it more as a sensation that has overcome us as we study and marvel about our Lord.

I apologize for such a long review Roy. You just have a knack for hitting on a tender subject.

Hi Roy,
]This is a well written, rhymed and metered poem about question whether recorded history is true or not. I think it is biased because it is usually written by the winner. But I think they get information from archaeological date, people's diaries and sometimes, in more recent times imbedded TV reporters.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Joan

There's an interesting philosophy here or a questioning of reality, of history, it seems to me. Are these ambitions and accomplishments of man really accomplishments after all? Does it stand up to the refining lense of Christ? I think that is what you are trying to get across here. estory

I doubt the stories of Bonaparte and Genghis Khan were inspired by the Holy Spirit and I'm sure a lot of exaggeration and lore went into those stories. I think the Bible leaves a lot to the imagination, but I feel like God hand was on those who recorded the scripture and enough is there to make sure even the simplest of us can grasp enough truth to find our way.
If we are to believe God has no beginning and no end then there is whole lot we'll never know until we reach the next realm of what might have happened in this vast universe before the story of our little earth took place. I imagine God's creative side has always existed and the story of this earth is just a blip in time. There is a lot that doesn't make since to our finite minds and one is that suddenly around 7000 or so years ago, God decided it was time to start creating.

History's Conundrum is a poem by Roy Owen about history and the question of what really happened versus what someone wrote...
I respond to Roy...
"History is a set of lies agreed upon," is what Napoleon spoke.
Stalin changed Russian history so many times, it became a joke!
Remember, it is the victor who gets to write the history down,
And sometimes the victor is nothing more than a clown!
