That was another very busy month, Beth! You were truly a member of the sandwich generation, looking after your elderly father and your children. I admire your stamina. Great read.

This is a great continuation of the ongoing Shelby family history. So many things are going on with your family! I almost feel as though I know them. I know what it's like to care for an aging parent, and I think you did a wonderful job, even with taking breaks! You really needed to.

Here are some suggestions:

What a horrific accident on the Mississippi River! I don't remember hearing about it, but I don't consistently watch the news.

My favorite line: "I'm sure the cat was duly impressed." Very cute and clever.

Are you related to Senator Richard Shelby, of Alabama? I get emails from Intercessors for America (IFA) suggesting various government leaders and legislators who we can pray for, and he was among them.

I lost track of which state you were living in, but I think I remember that you lived in various Southern states.

Thank you so much Mary Kay. You are amazing to look at my writing so carefully and help me improve it. I'm delighted with the stars. The accident on the Mississippi caught our attention because we lived in the New Orleans area for 17 years. We were born in Mississippi and are now in Chattanooga, Tennessee. You've not read my genealogy book called, Pioneers of my People. One of the chapters was about genealogy of the Shelby family. Senator Shelby is related to our Shelby line, but we've never met him personally.

You're very welcome, Beth. I hope to catch at least a few chapters of your genealogy book, when I can. Thanks for explaining about where you live (and lived previously), and about Senator Shelby! God bless you, my friend. Love, Mary Kay xoxo

I haven't read previous episodes of the Selby family saga, but think this is a fabulous idea. I'm sure writing this has brought more memories to mind than you had when you began writing. This story shows that 'life happens' to all of us. We do what we can based on circumstances, and keep pushing forward. Thank you for sharing. This story is inspirational.

Thank you so much for you great review. Yes writing brings back a lot of memories. My life is much like everyone's life. We deal with whatever we need when it happens. I'm glad you like reading my story.

Your story thus far was well organized, Beth. I enjoyed reading it.
You gave readers great details about everyone's lives. It seemed
like money, or lack of it, was a constant issue with the kids. Don
was being used by that doctor. I've never heard of going door to
door to drum up business. Also, the fact he wasn't paid for helping
patients was wrong. I know what you meant about setting a high
precedent from past holiday celebrations that made you feel you
had to do it every year. I didn't know about the boat accident.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you Jan. This is a great review. Yes Don was being used by the doctor. He made a bad decision by going with him. He had to pay high rent, but wasn't paid when he adjusted the doctors patients. It didn't end well.

It's hard to imagine just how similar peoples experiences are until we start reading about others lives. All of us thinking we are unique, when in reality, we are all about the same in how we live and the shared responsibilities. Thanks for sharing another great chapter!

Thank you Ric. I think the problems I face may be a bit different form yours, but we all have problems. When people tell me that my life is filled with so many bad things, I don't see it that way. I think my life is not so different from everyone else's life. We all face daily challenges. It isn't horrible. It's just life.

Yes, Beth, you are so right. As I've often said, speaking of the cycle of life: when times are bad, they will most times get better; but, when times are the best they can be, then you better get ready, they will change.

Hi Beth, no, as you say at the end of this wonderful new installment, it is as well we can't see into the future. So things are moving along on an almost even keel. Now what will the new year bring? I certainly hope that Don will start to earn some money. I'm looking forward to what's next. Ulla:)))

I hear about your dad having a hard time adjusting to black doctors and dentists. I did too! Connie is a real success story. I agree it's unwise to spend a fortune on a brand new car. Seems Don is always needing more money. The things we do for our kids. Yeap, my cat is impressed that I'm eighty. I love that you are in a financial situation that you can help your children when they need it.

Thanks for a great review. We all adjust to whatever life throws at us. What else can you do? I'm sure you explained to your cat how impressive it is to get to be as old as we are without having nine lives to count on. LOL

Although it is written in the style of a Christmas summary, this piece manages to find enough events and personalities to keep it interesting. The problems people face within the story are so representative of American lives that I was hooked.

Great wrap up of another eventful year!
The line that resonated most with me in this post was " there were times I wondered if this would be my life from now on." We never know how long a particularly stressful season will last and wonder if it's going to be months or years and if we would be able to last! You did beautifully with patience for your father and your children.
Typo:
he wasn't intereste. (interested)
