This is so very cute. The dialogue is genuine:

When Harley visits here he doesn't poop in the backyard."

"Yes, he does. Grandma cleans it up."

Made me laugh. Great family memories. D

Barbara, I love dogs and most other animals. My dog, Rocco, is an example.=). I love the interplay between Eleanor and Andrew. It's so typical of a father talking to his daughter. You captured that pretty well.

This is a lovely story about Eleanor and her yearning for a dog. I had dogs growing up; yes, they teach us unconditional love. I hope they find the time to get her one. Thank you, Barbara, for sharing this heartwarming story.
God bless,
Steve

Barbara, I really like this chapter. It reminds me of me and my siblings begging our mom and dad for a dog. "We'll scoop up after it, mom and dad, we promise!"
So, in good faith, my parents relented. We kids were true to our word! The first day we gleefully scooped the dog's poop. I still have a picture in mind of my mom, come rain or shine, winter or summer, scooping our dog's poop day after day! And doggie puke would make us kids run in another room. I miss my mom and dad for many reasons. One reason is had 4 of my own dogs--one right now--and I scoop at least twice a day.
My mom would be proud.
This is such a sweet story, reminiscent of my childhood!
Sorry about the rant; I don't mean to take away the thunder for your cute story. My dog is asleep, and I have no one to talk to right now.
Have a nice weekend, Barbara.
Congrats again on your published work.
Best wishes,
Cindy

Thank you for sharing your story with me. I loved it. I have had at least one dog my entire life. All my novels have dogs in them. I feel everybody needs a dog.

Oh my word Barbara,
this is too funny. I wish I knew some people who liked dog poop, I'd ask them to walk around the neighborhood and clean up after the folks who have dogs but don't feel the need to clean up after them. That poor child needs a dog, but I know all too well the problem with live pets. Perhaps she'd settle for tropical fish until she gets old enough to be responsible for a dog. God love her. Thanks so much for sharing this. It made me laugh out loud.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Hey, my friend -- you couldn't pass up the opportunity to write about it, and I couldn't pass up the chance to read it. :)

One minor correction -- these are independant clauses, so you need either double hyphens or semi colons -- like this:

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately my just turned four-year-old granddaughter, Eleanor(;) her birthday was July 29th(;) gave me something to write about, and I couldn't pass it up.

"Dogs don't poop a lot." HAHAHAHAHA!

"No, but maybe our neighbors like dog poop." AAAAaHAHAHA! This child is precious!

Please be sure to tell Andrew your readers say Ellie needs a dog too. :))

What a charming story, Barbara!

Very sweet and funny, Barbara. Something tells me they'll be getting a dog. I loved your granddaughter's questions and suggestions, and your son was very patient with her and explained things well. And you certainly didn't help, but, hey, kids should have a dog. We had them when we were kids.

But I understand when both parents work, and everyone's out of the house much of the day, having a dog can be unfair to the dog. Still, people manage somehow.

The reader is getting the idea that Eleanor is dropping some heavy hints about wanting a dog. We'll have to see how that goes. We can tell Eleanor has a new plan: "Again, Eleanor got quiet for a few minutes, before she started again," just has a funny ending and maybe a happy ending for Eleanor,

One of the things my wife and I miss the most in our advanced years is having a dog. We are fortunate to have visits from our granddogs from time to time.
