I must start reading your story from the very beginning. It sounds like you had a good life with many unexpected experiences. I want to give you my condolences. God Bless You As You Write Your Life Story.

P.S. I have caught up on the chapters.....I have already written comments on this chapter but after finishing the prior chapter today, I thought I'd update.

This is a highly interesting story that I always look forward to. Your rock garden would have been a thing of beauty if it were meant to be. Well done again!

This certainly was a disturbing time in your life. Starting with the building of a new house to the sick puppies and the rock garden episode, it's a wonder you didn't get sick from all the stress. I would have had a panic attack for sure.

Thank you so much for the review and comments. I'm sure there must have been some good things going on during that period of my life. It is funny the bad things are more memorable.

This narrative of family life paints a complicated picture of people pulled in all kinds of directions by life; and in the process, we get an inkling of the character and personality of the individuals as they navigate these struggles. There's an element of deferral from wife to husband as you let your husband build the country house, despite all the problems with the contractor and the strained relationship with him. The desire to remain in the shadows as you relate the story of spilling the beans on the unscrupulous fellow worker stealing company supplies. The sense of loss in the puppies dying in a failed dog breeding scheme. All these hopes and disappointments see saw through life just the way they do for all of us. You have a nice down to earth tone in the voice of the narrator, a confidential tone. Good attention to detail makes the little scenes come to life. estory

I can see this unfolding when driving off and the books becoming a treasure you would need to pay. Good write. Sorry about the loss but sometimes things are revealed like it or not. We just pretend it never happens.
Good one Beth.

Thank you Chuck, You missed the last one, so I wondered where you were. I was hoping all those Arkansas viruses hadn't gotten to you.
Thanks so much for the six stars.

Father Day weekend in the lake area with the kids. They bought me a tv screen big enough to be a drive in movie. LOL.

My, My, This part of your story was mostly sad, or bad news etc. Life is like that. Things run smooth for a while and then you can't do anything right for a while. Bad times are tests and it takes a string will to overcome. Well done, Beth. Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy, other than when Evan's father died I don't remember being sad. Those other thing broght on some anxiety and aggravation but we sort of handled them as the roller coaster ride that life sems to be. Thank you so much for the review and comments.

Wow! This is a very interesting chapter, and it is aptly named, "Things Which Don't End Well," but you could have just as easily named it, "Murphy's Law!"

From poorly delivered news about a death in the family, to a very awkward encounter at work, to a litter of doomed puppies, and more, you really had your fill of trouble.

I like the way you described your response to those things in your "Background" section: "We handled them as they happened."

Here are the errors I found and/or suggested revisions:

...we knew there was hard feelings and we felt awkward being around them.

In the end, you did help me fill in the ground, back in the area which I had dug out, where my rock garden was supposed to go.

What's very good about this chapter is that it lets the reader know that he or she is not alone in suffering difficulties; we all have them in life, and we all have to handle them. I am sure your children, and even your grandchildren, will have a special appreciation for everything you went through as a married couple, parents and homeowners. You really have a fine conversational voice in the story, achieving a very pleasant blend of narrator and participant in your own past. You have made it personal, addressing it to your deceased husband, without being unduly sentimental.

Mary Kay, you are a wonderful editor and I love it when you read my posts because they get such careful attention, and I feel you've found most of grammatical errors. I also love your comments. You are so kind. Thank you for those stars.

If it ain't one thing it's another! Your poor husband getting the news about his father's death--kids sure tell it like it is. Wise advice re not hiring friends. What a life--keep it coming. Cheers. LIZ

Thank you Liz, I really appreciate you hanging in there with my tale of woes. Family and even close friends are bad news when it comes to business or money matters.

Dear Beth, this post contains a lot of disappointments, but they are, a part of life too! Are they not?
As usual your writing is clear and well organized, I hope you have collected a whole band of faithful readers, like me, who look forward to each post.

It really sounds terrible when I write it down, but I remember any periods of my life when I was unhappy. I think we all took whatever happened in stride. As you say, thar;s life, and overall I think I had a great life. I'd do all again if I had that choice. Thanks for the review.
