This is fun. I had no idea where the story was going until the last line. Walter was a dog. I didn't see the end coming. Clever and cute. I love the image of the trees in the grassy area. I liked the part where he knew he'd be missed almost immediately. This sounds like a happy dog. Congratulations on reaching the break in your teaching schedule. Yay! Thank you for this romp in the early morning.
Take care, Jesse

LOL! Thanx for your review on this one, Jesse -- glad Walter could pass along his happiness to you this morning! ;) Take care out there, sir, and have a great week! ;) Yvette

Hi Yvette.
Yes, your post started my day in an upbeat fashion. I'm glad you finally get a break. Enjoy your week, as well.
Take care, Jesse

Ha, ha! I love this. The culminating twist caught me completely unaware {smiles}.
One thing did throw me -- but I'm assuming it's down to the difference between American English and British English:
He'd barely gotten his leg hiked!
The more usual term here would be "leg cocked".
Also, I find "barely gotten" awkward. If this was mine, I'd reword it as:
"He had barely cocked his leg!" (maintaining word count).
But that's just personal preference...
Oh, but I do like the dog's name, Walter -- very appropriate. LOL!
Wishing you the best of luck with the contest judging committee {smiles}.
Have a great week,
Alex.

Thanx so much for your review, Alex, always so good of you to drop by! ;) And thanx for the suggestions - yes, there is a difference between the sides of the pond on the colloquialisms nd use/identification with certain words. :) Glad you enjoyed Walter's little quick break.... take care over there! ;) Yvette

Certainly urgent enough from poor Walter's POV! Fun story, and captured well in 50 words. I'm looking at your bio, you fascinating woman, you! Good luck with the contest.

A little fun piece. At least, he got to go, bless his heart. What did she expect him to do, hold it forever? Lovely picture. I'm glad you're getting to have some fun during your break.

Even if I just kinda 'be useless' (which the blonde could never do with my personality) it would be a wonderful step away from lectures/grading! ;) :) LOL! ;) Thanx for the review, Yvonne -- hope Fall's moving in up/over there! ;) Yvette

It is. Slowly.

I think that you have a winner here. Have I ever said that before? I've read a bunch of these entries, and your's is the only one that made me smile. I love the "Oh that woman!" line. And, he barely had his leg hiked. It's funny. I love the dog, and it's all done in 50 words.
Like I said, a winner.

LOL! Well, probably not, but it was a crazy brainstorm from left field that just sortof percolated as I sat on the front porch yesterday evening 'decompressing' after posting all my 1st quarter grades....HOORAY!! ;) :) Glad you really enjoyed Walter, MQ, and hope things are going well for you.... when and where's coffee this month...? LOL! ;) Take care! ;) Yvette

Still looking forward to that coffee. Mom took a turn for the worse yesterday. She is now permanently on oxygen. I keep checking on her because she can't figure out how to keep the tube in her nose. I even caught her putting her eye drops in her nose. She is so confused. I have gone to bed and get up only to check on her.

Fall break already! Hooray for you! Thanks for the giggles! I can almost hear the older dog's voice and how he finds his owner's overseeing all his movements.
Best wishes in the contest!

Yes!! Celebration!! Now, I've got to find something with which to busy myself or I'll go stir crazy - LOL! ;) Thanx so much for your review, Helen -- Walter is grateful that you could relate to his 'trappings'! :) Take care - Yvette :)

Hey Yvette. That's a good one! Seriously, I am going to have to read this one to Ralphie. He is just about old enough now to try lifting his leg. It's still funny watching him at this point. :)) Z Enjoy your free time...if you can get some.

You have to let me know what Ralphie thinks.... and if he actually needs a break from his human once in a while.... LOL!! ;) :) Thanx so much for your review, Z -- always so good to read your smile! ;) Yvette

You're welcome

He said, "why would I lift my leg?" We're going bow tie shopping so I can update his picture. He will look sharp with a tie. :))). Z

Your ultra-concise fiction piece is clever, cute, and entertaining. Giving the dog a quality some humans don't even have, consideration for
others--nice touch! :-)

LOL! ;) I think sometimes dogs do exhibit better empathetic qualities than the humans around them, don't you? Very sad, but true... :) :) Glad Walter could make you smile, Janice -- take care over there this week! ;) Yvette
